"One of the biggest schisms in the automotive universe happened in 1998 when Porsche kept its word and put its air-cooled flat six-cylinder engines to bed after 34 years of production.
Purists may still be highly offended today at the idea of a liquid-cooled engine in the back of a 911 but if you're cooling-flexible, MotoeXotica Classic Cars offers this 2002 Porsche 911 (996) Carrera 4 Coupe.
Dressed in Polar Silver (code L92U), the car's paint and trim are in overall very good order. The car's body-colored bumpers fit tightly, the engine bay is tidy, so is the frunk. There are Hella headlamps and an electronically adjustable rear spoiler that deployed at speeds over 75 mph. It could also be raised manually by means of an electric switch.
The Carrera and Carrera 4 underwent revisions for the 2002 model year, receiving clear lens front and rear indicator lights which were first seen on the Turbo version two years earlier. This allowed the 911 to be more distinguishable from the Boxster. A mildly revised front fascia was also introduced, though the basic architecture remained.
The Carrera 4S was the perfect all around 911 when it was introduced, providing more performance than the base car and when a Turbo or GT2 was priced out-of-reach of some prospective buyers.
This car rolls on newer Falken Azen1s FR510 radials, size P205/50R17 in front and P225/40ZR19 in rear. They are each mounted on newly installed Avant Garde alloy wheels. The tires and wheels are all in very good order. The car also has a 16.9-gallon fuel tank and has a 92.5-inch wheelbase. The car also appears to have been lowered and has a nice stance.
Out back is a 3.6L DOHC, 24-valve, flat, liquid-cooled six-cylinder engine (code M96) with sequential multi-port fuel injection. The original engine displacement was 3.4L making 296 horsepower and featured a change to an ""integrated dry sump"" design and variable valve timing. For 2002, displacement was bumped to 3.6L and power rose to 316 horsepower. The motor is connected to a five-speed automatic transmission (code ZF 5HP19).
Driver convenience features include electronic climate control, cruise control, power steering, power four-wheel disc brakes with cross-drilled rotors, power locks, power windows, power and heated sideview mirrors, power sunroof and telescopic steering column with leather-wrapped steering wheel. There is some wear on the drivers seat. On 6/22 the current owner had Best Buy install an upgraded stereo system at a cost of $997.00 original stereo goes with the car.
Safety equipment includes dual front airbags, side impact airbags, anti-lock brakes, vehicle stability control, electronic parking brake, intermittent windshield wipers, rear window defroster, keyless entry, vehicle anti-theft system and electronic parking aid.
Inside, the car features black leather interior with full power-adjustable leather seats for the driver and passenger (with driver's side memory). The seat's position was related to the key used to open the car so, if two drivers would use the vehicle, at the opening the door mirrors and the seat was adjusted accordingly. A new infotainment unit (Porsche Communication Management) was installed, with an option for sat-nav.
Other major changes included a completely new platform having a sleeker body with a more raked windshield, and a re-designed interior along with new ""fried egg"" shaped headlamps (so called due to the amber-colored turn signals) instead of previous ""bug eye"" headlamps.
Coupe competition to this Porsche in 2002 included Chevrolet's Corvette, Jaguar's XK8, Mercedes-Benz's CL 500 and Saleen's S281 Coupe.
