"2001 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am WS6 Coupe
2010 marked the final year for the Pontiac Motor Division at GM and eight years earlier, the last Trans Am rolled off the assembly line, much to the chagrin of Firebird loyalists throughout North America. But the car that came in like a lion, left like a lion harboring 325 horsepower under the hood with the LS series V8. In 2001, more than 20,000 Firebirds were built and among them, 6,779 of them were WS6 coupes.
For consignment, a 2001 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am WS6 coupe with a title verified 33,422 actual miles. A majority of the WS6 coupes built in 2001 just happen to be black, more than 1,500 of them. And maybe because the color makes the bone car a little bit ""badder"". It suits this F-body very well and cloaks some of the modifications made to this particular example, including something shiny and blue under the rear hatch.
Exterior
There's no hiding the aggressive front end of this car, no matter what color paint adorns it. It is one of the great scoop fronted ends with inset marker lights molded into the corners, fog lights deep within two round tunnels, and then the Ram Air set up, quad scoops, stacked in front to capture all of the air the moving car can inhale. What air it misses, ride the hills and valleys of the hood, finding their way to a steeply raked windshield where the air continues its travels to the sloping rear glass and ironing-board-like rear wing. The aggressive face gives way to a slightly tempered tail, as if providing a gentle goodbye to all of the cars that you end up passing. Curved plexiglass covers the red lenses, black hexagons creating a visual blend with the bumper cover and a rear valance that provides two tunnels for the exhaust, in this case, a single pipe on each side. 17-inch chrome wheels carry 40 series tires and the WS6 center cap and T-tops close the roof. Scuffs on the chin and some discoloration on the rocker panel are the only imperfections we find on the exterior.
Interior
Standard charcoal door panels with textured plastic and gray buttons show no wear. Black leather bucket seats are sports car focused and have prominent side bolsters and the accordion style flex zone used in Trans Ams since the late 1980's GTAs, the driver's seat showing slight compression. The rear 2+2 seats have deep bottoms and could use a deep detail, but are fully intact, while the beefy black steering wheel is sculpted for good grip and is where more gray buttons reside for radio control. A standard dash continues the monochromatic interior while gauges have been added to the A-pillar and a shift light to the dash pad. The center stack features large, gray plastic buttons and knobs for radio and heater and AC controls and another aftermarket white faced gauge sits between the vents. A leather booted shifter is in the center console and its leather clad knob conforms with the factory interior styling and low pile charcoal carpet is in good shape and protected by carpeted mats. That carpet appears in the cargo area as well where the single color theme is broken up by a nitrous tank.
Drivetrain
We already know we have laughing gas on board, and that enhances the 5.7 liter LS1 V8 under the hood. But things are a bit more crowded in the bay as this bird is equipped with a Procharger onboard and suddenly, some of those extra gauges in the cabin suddenly make even more sense! A T56 6-speed manual backs this enhanced motor up, sending power to the 10 bolt axle with Positraction. Power disc brakes counter the forward momentum and are utilized in the front and back.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with surface rust and general usage wear. The exhaust is an SLP system that starts at the headers and works its way back to a FlowMaster muffler before exiting via two pipes split wide in back. A UMI suspension kit enhances the front coil springs and torque arm and coil spring suspension in back. We do note a few drops of oil on the procharger itself.
Drive-Ability
We're going to avoid the boost and juice, and take a casual spin around the test loop because the promise of power in an already potent engine is good enough for us! Of course, the WS6 handles as if on rails and is driven with F-body comfort and support. The exhaust note is superb and things light up like a Christmas tree in the cockpit. Piloting this rocket with its added features engaged is probably like Christmas morning every morning! Functionally, everything onboard, from GM and beyond, works as it should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Speed demons and Trans Am lovers take note, here's an American sport machine with some tweaks. It's a muscle car on steroids and if possible for a Trans Am, a bit of a sleeper. Beyond the mods, the exterior styling of this gen T/A is very good, Pontiac nailed it. And the interior is not a bad place to be either! This black bird is ready to fly and if you're looking for a car that keeps things under its wings, this one should be on your consideration list.
