"1995 Pontiac Firebird Formula Firehawk
""In 1991, Pontiac and SLP joined forces to create a new performance RPO code named B4U, aka the SLP Firehawk. This option was first available on the Firebird Formulas, a non Trans Am V8 bird, during the last year of the 3rd generation. Firehawks got a L98 350 V8 with ported heads, and a few other mods throughout to give it an output of 360 horsepower. When the fourth generation F-body debuted as 1993 models, the Firehawk came along for the ride. A new, sleeker and more aerodynamic body was part of the redesign for all Firebirds, including the Firehawks. 201 Firehawks were made for 1993, and the second generation Firehawk would live on until the final year run for the Firebirds."" For consignment, a 1995 Pontiac Firebird Formula Firehawk showing 58,228 miles but the true miles are unknown. What is known is that this is one of just 671 Firehawks produced in 1995 and one of 41 in this color. The 31stannual Firehawk Rally takes place in mid July in Sandusky, Ohio so you have plenty of time to purchase this car and join the club!
Exterior
Medium Dark Purple Metallic was one of ten colors available in 1995, the most common is black and the rarest is teal, and purple falls somewhere in the middle with 41 of 671 cars, with light colored Firehawk decals on the sides and back that leave no doubt this is a unique Firebird. Special 17-inch wheels also set this bird apart and in 1995, split exhaust would be replaced with dual tips on the driver's side. 315hp is advertised on the hump of the air scoops on the hood but if you're at a distance, the car's profile presents as a Formula and will fool you into a challenge, until you get close enough to read the signs! Still, it holds true to Pontiac's performance persona, with a large integrated horizontal wing over the wide taillights that wear a darkening black grid, all behind a large, curved rear window. Imperfections are few with a chin scrape and one on the bottom of rear valance.
Interior
Standard Graphite coverage on the long door panels with curved plastic forming lower storage around door speakers and both doors present cleanly. Deep and supportive Graphite leather seats with Pontiacs trademark accordion side bolsters are high backed and clean while the 2+2 in back offers smaller sitting areas in a no frills environment. An ergonomic steering wheel houses an airbag along with some thumb controls on a tilt column that leads to a rather simple instrument cluster for such a performer, clear information ahead and no unnecessary distractions. Gray buttons dominate the AM/FM/Cassette in the center which includes an EQ and a CD changer in the hatch, while just below we find the three gray knobs of the A/C panel. The center console is a separate piece, housing a Hurst shifter denoted by the telltale H embossed in the leather handle, just in front of the Firehawk badge, indicating that this is car #450. Black carpet below provides good coverage while the padded headliner around the T-tops looms above us in excellent condition. Pull up on the floor of the cargo area and it reveals a deep storage area to stow the tops when rolling Bandit style.
Drivetrain
A big air intake fronts the engine bay where we find the 5.7 liter LT1 V8 tucked under the cowl and putting out 315 horsepower. The fuel injected engine is mated to a T56 6-speed manual that sends power to the 10 bolt rear axle with 3.42 gears and Positraction. Power disc brakes occupy all four wheels.
Undercarriage
It was the Performance Exhaust Package that was first offered on the '94 Firehawk that bumped horsepower by 15 to 315, and it's twin pipe enter the cat together, then exit via a 3"" catback, finding a high flow crossflow muffler which emits two tailpipes that leave in tandem out the back. We find some typical surface rust on the drive shaft, exhaust, and some suspension components along with some residual oil on the pan and transmission, but in general the underside qualifies as clean. Suspension consists of coil springs in the front and torque arms with coil springs out back.
Drive-Ability
The familiar F-body seating position and comfortable interior invites occupants to play, and the impressive exhaust note of this car rolls out the red carpet. But we're here to work, not play, and so we feather this bird around the track where its power is more evident with every shift. This is a potent bird of prey, not some timid titmouse. Two things of note, the driver's power mirror does not go up and down electronically, and the driver's seat is a bit loose. Meanwhile, all other functions on the car operate as they should including the often disquieting popup hidden headlights! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
It's nearly impossible to label an F-body a sleeper. They were designed with speed in mind, emulating the lean and low racers of the Trans Am series and never intended to be a boring, run of the mill commuter car. But in the world of Firebirds, Firehawks have a certain something that makes them understated and special and mysterious. Unlike the flared and winged Trans Ams, Firehawks cloak their potential and hide their bite. But a little script sticker changes that for those who know. Here's a well kept rare one now flying through the open market!
