1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SL Roadster
The 560SL was the final version of the R107 series. It made its debut in September 1985, when the model was given a facelift for the 1986 model year. 46,263 were supplied to the United States over their production run from 1985 to 1989 and just 5,351 560SL's were built in 1989 and not all of them were imported to the U.S.
For consignment, a 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SL roadster with a verified 11,416 actual miles. Built in January of 1989, this survivor might not be the lowest mileage 560SL in the country, but it might be close as these were often used as daily drivers and enjoyed by owners as capable luxury sport roadsters. Extensive service records will accompany this car including recent service of brake hoses, pads and rotors, brake fluid, air and fuel filters, and battery. In addition, a new canvas top was purchased within the past year and is also included.
Exterior
The unmistakable Mercedes grille and three-point star fronts this car giving it a world renowned recognizability as a quality mark. Dual headlights, round for the United States, have flares of amber turn signals that drift back like windblown tufts, while fog lights and rectangular marker lights in front relay this car's sporty side. Bathed in near flawless Artic White two stage paint, accents include polished window reveals, body side molding at the level of the wraparound bumpers, and the grooved lower body panel. A double gray pinstripe complements the dark features that include the door handle, the tires, the bumpers, and the black canvas top. The accessory hardtop is included and is white to match the car. Out back, grooved lenses of the three color tail lights are also distinct and the straight chrome bumper provides mirror-like reflection. The wheels are in fantastic condition and along with the rest of the exterior, we could not find any glaring imperfections. Tires have a mid-2023 date code.
Interior
There's a lightness to this car in presentation and it's magnified by the choice of gray leather on the interior beginning on the smooth door panels with gently pleated crowns and diminutive hardware. The stitched and perforated bucket seats are in remarkable condition as well, adorned with robust chrome hardware to adjust and move the seats. They flip forward allowing access to a plush carpeted cargo shelf just behind. Looking forward, the steering wheel and dash are showroom fresh with Mercedes readable VDO gauges and idiot lights, clear, concise and well engineered. The center stack is dressed in dark burlwood applique and houses the AM/FM/Cassette radio over the A/C controls and it waterfalls onto the center console where the shifter awaits its orders. Plush gray carpet covers the floor in toe deep luxury and it also covers the under dash panel and in cut to fit mat form in the trunk and it's all in very nice shape.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, an impressively clean 5.6 liter SOHC V8 rated at a respectable 227 horsepower. It's fuel injected and backed by a 4-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels and 2.47 gears. A car of this quality deserves good brakes, so power discs are found at all four wheels!
Undercarriage
Perhaps the only part of the car that indicates usage, time tempered patina is present but the underside is otherwise clean and dry with side pans providing some aerodynamics and bridging the tunnel that houses the driveshaft and other components. The exhaust meets at a Y-pipe then travels through shrouds before it exits in tandem to find an original equipment muffler and two tailpipe tips. Coil springs occupy the independent suspension of the front and the back.
Drive-Ability
You know what's better than a classic 560SL? A fresh, classic 560SL! And this one fits the bill. It's clean and tight and the V8 provides exhilarating power and acceleration. Consistent with the model, the car handles well, tracks straight, and delivers an admirable driving experience. Since it maintained its youth through low mileage, all functional items on the car operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Everyone has their own opinion as to what's the perfect car and often, the R107 series of Mercedes ends up on that list. It combines a bit of luxury with sportiness, a handsome exterior, a plush interior, and a notable, quality brand. This one is a well preserved and fine example of the Mercedes-Benz 560SL.
