"1984 Pontiac Fiero Sport Coupe
""The Fiero is a complete breakaway from previous Pontiac or GM technology and marketing. It is the first mid engine mass production car from the U.S. industry, the first with an all plastic body, (as distinct from fiberglass), only the second 2 seater from GM after the Corvette, and after the Corvair, the only non front engine car. Beyond the obvious motive of opening up a new market and making money for Pontiac, is to raise public consciousness for the division's technical expertise and to develop new manufacturing methods that combine quality improvement with increased worker morale."" Road and Track, September 1983
For consignment, a 2 owner 1984 Pontiac Fiero sport coupe with a title verified 17,038 actual miles. Yes, that's right, a well preserved example of a now classic sports car from GM. This car was polarizing for a time but there is no doubt it has a substantial place in the history of American automotive manufacturing and finding a first year gem like this is becoming increasingly rare.
Exterior
The press car, the poster car, the one that was introduced to the public was dressed in red and so is our example here. Single stage was used in 1984 and is contrasted by the black accents that include side mirrors, front and rear bumper guards, a black trim line molding that completely encircles the little car, the rocker panel, B-pillar, sail panel, engine cover, and of course, Pontiac's distinctive trend of darkening rear tail lights. The profile is pure wedge, conjuring up comparisons to late model Triumphs and a slightly bloated Fiat X1-9, but unmistakably Fiero. The 14-inch wheels were purely Fiero as well, a 5 spoke array of geometric patterns borrowed from brother Trans Am but softened with rounded openings. Some of the clear coat on the wheels is delaminating and that's about the only exterior imperfection we noted.
Interior
Gray plastic panels over a looped carpet low cover the door panels cleanly although both armrests could use a deep detail. The gray cloth buckets seats are sporty and supportive and are intersected by a sizable center console with a vertical storage bin, window and mirror switches, and the 4-speed manual shifter. The gray plastic here could also use some attention as age has caused some discoloration. The 3 spoke steering wheel provides a confident grip surface and fronts a wonderfully 80's dashboard with yellow numbers on black backgrounds and graphics above the idiot lights. A simple center stack is uncrowded with vents, A/C panel, and an AM/FM radio, all with black buttons and knobs. The loop carpet from the doors flows onto the floors in fine fashion and the gray fleece like headliner is loose and drooping. The frunk is clean and contains the condenser, power brake booster, spare tire, and various reservoirs.
Drivetrain
A clean engine bay reveals the 2.5 liter four cylinder engine rated at 92 horsepower and fuel injected. It's tied to a 4-speed manual transmission which keeps power in the rear and 4.10 gears. In modern sports car configuration, the car is equipped with power disc brakes on all four wheels.
Undercarriage
Super clean underneath where the undercoating still shines and there's virtually no surface rust to note. The brake components and steering knuckle are free of grease and dirt and we do not see any oil leaks. The single exhaust retains its original muffler and tailpipe while independent suspension is onboard front and rear.
Drive-Ability
Low, sporty, and comfortable, the Fiero feels light and nimble on our test loop, handling great, tracking straight, and with the stick shift, feeling quicker than it is. The full rear window allows for great visibility and the cabin is overall a very comfortable configuration. The A/C is cycling but still blows cold and all other functions on the car work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Long before the C8 went mid engine, the little Fiero was kicking up dust as daily drivers, a revolutionary design in the mid-80's that eventually evolved with a GT version and even a pace car! As with Miatas, first year models, especially well preserved low mileage versions are desirable and we're proud to represent this now noteworthy American sports car.
