"1980 Lincoln Continental Mark VI Sedan
Updating a masterpiece is not a small feat, and with the Mark III, Lincoln had a strong selling car that always made a profit. But in 1972, it was time for a change and the Mark IV would hit smack dab in the middle of what we now call the malaise period. Fast forward to 1980, and the Mark VI was introduced, the fifth generation of the Mark series and the first redesign since '72, and it was the first of the series to shrink in size coming in 11 inches shorter and 930 pounds lighter than the Mark V.
For consignment, a 1980 Lincoln Continental Mark VI sedan with a title verified 44,170 actual miles. Along with recent routine maintenance, our consignor also upgraded or replaced the fuel delivery system, the factory radio, headlights, and brakes. Many of the luxury features of this car are common and standard today, but in 1980, this was a top tier vehicle with features that made you feel like a king.
Exterior
This stately ride begins with a coat of Diamond Blue Metallic paint, topped with a dark blue vinyl half roof accentuated by oval porthole windows in wide C-pillars. Other stunning features of the Mark VI include triple vent gills on the front fenders, an opera light on the B-pillars, and covered headlights that flank a Rolls Royce-like grille. Regal lines continue on the back where a faux Continental kit shapes the decklid which is bookended with tasteful, vertical tail lights and mid panel reflectors. The shoulder line and profile of the car suggest sharp right angles that do not veer from boxiness, while the slightly raised hood center exudes wind resisting grace. The 15-inch turbine wheels were standard as Lincoln was quickly moving away from steel wheels with hubcaps. The exterior is spectacular, and we could not find any glaring imperfections.
Interior
To greet the driver, an elaborate and lavish inner door awaits. Bedecked in tasteful faux woodgrain, the surrounding blue plastic and vinyl takes a back seat to serve as the frame, while a robust chrome door actuator cove shines bright under a brushed nickel switchgear panel. Carpet lines the kick panel with embedded courtesy light and an integrated door pull at the top caps off a stunning piece of luxury. The well cushioned blue velour seats are technically separate buckets, but they present like a pair of adjoined Lazy Boys and thick tufting is accompanied by a pillow top lumbar pad. In a nice attention to detail, wood appliqu lines the shell of the upper and lower seat. The back bench shares the welcoming cloud-like comfort and we know which car to call on when it's time to take a cat nap! Stylized woodgrain adorns the steering wheel which has some early thumb buttons on the spokes while the instrument cluster keeps the quadrangular design with square gauges next to square vents under enough faux wood to clear a plastic forest. And it's all amazingly clean. A modern touchscreen is on board with AM/FM, Bluetooth, CarPlay, and Android capabilities. Toe deep blue carpet covers the floor, a felt lined headliner is up above, and the finished trunk is lined with gray cloth panels.
Drivetrain
Under the big hood is a clean and original looking 351ci Windsor V8 with a 2300 style 2-barrel carburetor and mated to Ford's venerable AOD 4-speed automatic transmission sending power to the rear axle with 2.73 gears. The power brakes, discs in front, drums in the rear include new rotors, pads, calipers, rear brakes, and master cylinder. A Ford Duraspark II distributor was added and all original parts that were replaced for fuel and ignition will be included with sale.
Undercarriage
Other than some surface rust and residual oil about, the underside is clean. A single exhaust goes through a stock style muffler before looping over the axle and exiting discreetly under the car. Suspension is made up of coil springs in front and a 4 link with coil springs in back.
Drive-Ability
We step back in time when velour was the ""in"" textile and the softer the seat, the better. This is not a canyon carving sports car, it's the car you use to cruise to the bank, the country club, and the latest black tie event. Meanwhile, the car starts with no problem and floats along the test loop with decent power, a soft ride, (naturally), and good braking. We note the A/C is not working but all other functional items on the car operate as they should, even the headlight covers! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Add a little English Leather cologne to this car and we're transported to a time when we were sure this was the top of the food chain reserved for rich uncles, or at least those with enough brand loyalty to drive another after III, IV, and V. Luxury cars today seem to be leather clad, Alcantara if you're lucky, and tight black spaces with hard plastics and piano black accents. This Lincoln is a relic of a time when soft ride meant soft inside and out and it's a fantastic example of a long gone era of cars. And with well sorted low mileage, it's got many more country club cruises to go!
