"1979 MG Midget Convertible
The name ""Midget"" was first used by MG in 1929 and scribed to the M Type, this being MG's first baby sports car based on the then newly released Morris Minor. Then came the first of the T Type Midgets, the TA in late 1936, culminating with the TF model of 1954. The modern MG Midget is a small two seater sports car produced by MG from 1961 to 1979. It revived a name that had been used on earlier models.
For consignment, a 1979 MG Midget convertible with a title verified 40,853 actual miles. This is a low owner car that represents the final year of the Midget. The latest owner, our consignor, has maintained it well over the years and this car presents as a very nice driver.
Exterior
There was a time when rubber bumpered MG's were less preferred than the earlier chrome, but the further we get from the era, the more attractive these cars become. This one's no exception with very good maroon paint that covers its little body, accented in black that includes a rocker panel, the canvas soft top, the tires, and yes, those bumpers. There's still plenty of brightwork on the car including the headlight rings, the windshield frame, the luggage rack, door handles, and side mirrors, all in good shape. The canvas top has three windows, showing a touch of patina but clear and intact while the 13-inch wheels are in good original condition. There is a drop of paint run by one of the door locks and on the nose and that represents the only noticeable imperfections on this straight bodied MG.
Interior
The diminutive doors open to reveal handsome tan vinyl door panels with alternating smooth and ribbed pattern with a touch of patina on each sun facing header. The bucket seats echo the color, materials, and design elements and include robust head restraints where we notice a crack on each, and we blame the sun again. A carpeted package shelf resides behind the seats and presents cleanly, as does what greets the driver, namely a black plastic steering wheel with a touch of patina, leading to the black dash housing basic gauges, dials, and toggle switches in a simple and readable configuration also showing a touch of age. In the center, an AM/FM radio is in place a short reach from the floor mounted shifter with black handle and black boot. The floor is covered with tan sectional carpet that is bordered in brown and cut to fit the angles of the interior while the trunk is clean and lined with a rubber mat holding a 5th MG wheel.
Drivetrain
Under the hood we find a clean bay housing a 1275cc inline 4 cylinder fueled by a 2-barrel carburetor and tied to a 4-speed manual transmission that sends power to the 3.72 gears in back. Brakes are configured as discs in front and drums in the back.
Undercarriage
With most of the underside boxed with aerodynamic panels, there's not much to see but what we do note is driver quality with some of the typical surface rust. There's some oil on the pan and residual oil in surrounding areas while the knuckles are free of grime. A single exhaust crosses the underside diagonally and heads back to a stock style muffler just before exiting under the right rear. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf springs in the rear.
Drive-Ability
If your favorite part of amusement parks as a kid was riding in the Speedway cars you could steer, then imagine the excitement of driving an MG Midget whenever you want! Its compact size makes a tossable little roadster and normal sized seats meet a condensed dash for some motoring fun. This inline four takes us around the loop with spirited handling and acceleration tuned to how fast you shift. It tracks straight, provides good visibility, and all available functions work as they're intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
If you have an affinity for British sports cars, and love tooling around the countryside with top down, then this may be the consignment for you. We present this '79 Midget with good paint and interior, running well and solid underneath. In the 1979 commercial, the announcer proclaims the Midget is ""strong, honest, fun, young"" as skateboarders leap over the car. Skateboarding may be a fad that's passed, but driving a vintage roadster is alive and well!
