"1979 MG MGB Roadster
""MGB, a wide open invitation to adventure. Here is the classic convertible sports machine, lean and eager for the road, true to MG's 53 year heritage of building sports cars with the strength and agility to compete in racing. The 1979 MGB offers you the sleek, uncluttered good looks and track bred engineering that make it pure pleasure to drive. Flip down the top and rev up the engine and fly!"". From the 1979 brochure, artistically designed as only the late 70's could produce with yellow and orange framing images of a provocative young couple in matching baseball style MG shirts.
For consignment, a 1979 MG MGB Roadster with a title verified 93,990 actual miles. A Best in Class winner at Morgantown's own Chariots of Fire car show in 2023, and presenting in a color that matches the vibe and trends of the late 70's. In many circles, the '77 '80 MG's are preferred due to the added anti-roll bars which greatly improved handling.
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public highways in your area.*
Exterior
This happy little Brit is brightened by its Snapdragon Yellow coat which is an ideal contrast to the typical black features of the car, including the most basic of things, the tires! Then, of course there are the rubber bumpers which integrate the intake grille in front. The canvas top is also black, here with three windows in great shape with some minimal hazing. The 14-inch wheels have black inserts for even more pizazz and it all works together to create a handsome little car. Out back, a luggage rack has been added ahead of the red topped tail lights that look like glazed candy corn adorning the edges of the rear. The brightwork and paint are quite good on the car and we could not find any glaring exterior imperfections save for some color mismatch on the body panels. There is a small crack in the windshield.
Interior
Circle and squares are part of the black vinyl door cards that are simple and intact with new speakers, while a textured black vinyl is used on the bucket seats, likely aiding in grip and air flow as your rip around in this roadster on wild, open air adventures! Head restraints are there for comfort and safety too while you grip the four spoke plastic steering wheel and keep an eye on the instrument cluster ahead, complete with tach and speedometer and the normal engine condition gauges in a textured black plastic base. The center stack has an updated radio with AM/FM, Bluetooth and USB, (we were still rocking cassette tapes in 1979!), along with vent controls and a lighter with requisite lit cigarette graphics. A new shifter knob has an overdrive button and is dressed in a black leather boot on the flat center console over low pile back carpet, all in good shape. The boot is a yellow painted affair housing a spare tire on an MG wheel.
Drivetrain
A custom valve cover tops the clean 1.8 liter four cylinder engine with a side mounted SU HF44 2-barrel carburetor and a horsepower rating of 62.5. The 4-speed manual with overdrive transmission sends power to the rear axle and 3.90 gears. Our consignor states the battery is new as of April 2025, and the drive belt and fan clutch are also newer. Power disc brakes are found in the front and back.
Undercarriage
Clean and essentially dry underneath with the bare minimum of surface rust and only residual oil film on the pan. The exhaust is newer with two pipes becoming one and including a stock style muffler and resonator on the way to the exhaust pipe that leaks out the back. There is no catalytic converter on board. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf springs out back.
Drive-Ability
It's go time in this yellow two seater and you don't have to ask twice! 62.5 horsepower is not enough to get into trouble, but more than enough for fun and spirited runs in this low car with a center of gravity to match. She shifts right, handles well, and stops when commanded. And hip hop, old chap, everything works on this car like it's supposed to! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
As we write this, things are warming up on the East coast and other temperate zones. We're all thinking about coming out of hibernation and getting behind the wheel or forested forays, grassland gallops, and roadway rallies, and what a better way to do it than in a well sorted MGB. This is a fantastic weekend toy that landed on our shores in 1979 but landed in the mall today. Temps up, tops down! It's your time to get a real British roadster!
