"1975 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale Convertible
""Economy should be important to you no matter what size car you drive. That's why Delta 88 features an impressive list of changes for improved gas mileage, the catalytic converter, lower idle speed, economy rear axle and much more. Delta 88 for 1975 is our toughest yet. The underbody has greater corrosion resistance than last year. Some exhaust components are stainless steel, for long life. You'll need less maintenance service. Now you can go up to 22,500 miles without changing spark plugs, up to 1,500 miles farther between oil changes."" From the 1975 sales brochure
For consignment, a 1975 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale convertible with a title verified 68,291 actual miles. This car has been well preserved and has a numbers matching drivetrain. Available body styles on the Delta 88 and Delta 88 Custom included a selection of 2 and 4 door holiday hardtops, or a 4 door town sedan. The Royale was available as a 2 door hardtop or a 2 door convertible only.
Exterior
Big steel body panels are colored in single stage Cameo White and move over Buick 225, because this car is a tick over 226 inches long! In the brochure, a realtor is shown packing up for sale signs and his briefcase into the trunk of a Delta and looking at the length of the rear quarter and enormous overhang, there's no doubt the trunk can be quite the hauler. Oldsmobile's wide front fascia breaks the grille into four sections and leaves the distinctive nose for the Olds logo, all flanked by quad headlights. Out back, a band of trim work conceals the reverse lights while the square tail lights bookend the back over a straight chrome bumper. The newer white canvas top and glass window are in great shape and 15-inch wheels with hubcaps carry 225/75R15's with a late 2020 date code. Imperfections include some minor dents, filler pieces that are either cracked or discolored, various scratches, and some touched up flaws.
Interior
Our favorite name for an interior color dresses the inside of this big Olds, beginning with the Dark Oxblood door panels on the wing sized doors with some 70's design trim between the textured top and armrest below with a modest carpeted kick panel and electric window switches. Both doors are in very good shape with the courtesy light hanging loose on the driver's side. The vinyl split bench has been wonderfully preserved with a myriad of stitch patterning and button accents but if you want to ride in style on cruise night, sit in the wide back bench, very clean and mirroring the design configuration of the front. The basic steering wheel wears a thin band of simulated woodgrain borrowed from the door panels, for an extra touch of class and coordination with the instrument cluster within a woodgrain faceplate. Like the car itself, the speedometer is long and horizontal and bookends include the climate panel on one side and the AM/FM radio on the other, all in clean condition. A JVC disc changer has been added along with a pair of gauges which GM didn't include at the time. A cupholder rides the transmission hump over oxblood carpet in nice shape and the cavernous trunk is covered with a gray felt mat.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, the original, numbers matching 350ci Rocket V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor and rated at 170 horsepower. It's mated to its numbers matching TH400 3-speed automatic transmission sending power to the 10 bolt axle with 2.73 gears. Power brakes on board are configured as discs in front and drums in the rear with newer calipers, wheel cylinders, hoses, and master cylinder. The water pump, radiator, alternator, and fan clutch have also been replaced. The engine bay presents in clean original form with some obvious patina rendered by time alone.
Undercarriage
Clean underneath with minimal surface rust and only residual oil on the pans and some on the rear differential as well. The single exhaust system looks newer, flowing through a stock style muffler and existing through a downturned steel tail pipe. Suspension is made up of coil springs in front and a 4 link with coil springs in the rear.
Drive-Ability
We set sail in this piece of 70's goodness as the 350 is a quick starter and smooth idler. Amazing that the roads and garages were smaller in the 70's and yet this car is enormous and representative of some big Detroit iron that was being produced at the time. Meanwhile, the car won't win drag races but cruises with ease, stops very well, and handles turns with all the yaw you would expect. We detected a slight exhaust leak at first that went away by the end of our drive. The right rear window can be controlled with the switch back there but not from the master switch plate on the driver's door as the window will go down but not back up. Beyond those things, all functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A low mileage, numbers matching, well preserved Delta 88 convertible. These are the ingredients that make it desirable and with cruise season here, why not get something you can load the family into and head down to Main Street USA. Sure, Oldsmobile is now considered an orphan brand, but it's also an iconic part of the American automotive landscape, and this provides acres of good fun! This is not some diamond in the rough. It's pure white gold.
