"1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Pace Car Convertible
""While Chevy made 3,675 units of its orange striped pace car, Oldsmobile built just 626 examples. And not all of them were of the Cutlass Supreme variety. That figure also includes 268 Olds 442 pace cars, leaving only 358 Cutlass models out there. Of the 358 pace cars sold in 1970, almost 300 left the assembly line with the big 455 cubic inch V8 in them. The entry level mill found its way into only 60 examples.""Thx Autoevolution.com
For consignment, a 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme convertible Indy Pace Car with a title verified 144,251 actual miles. And indeed, this is one of the 358 Cutlass Pace Cars and one of 60 with the 350ci L74 V8 under the hood. As Hemmings tells us, ""famed driver and two time Indy winner Roger Ward paced the race that year, and the two 442s that were specially modified to serve that purpose on the track were included among the 64 442 Pace Car convertibles listed.""
Exterior
Porcelain White was originally applied in the Lansing, Michigan plant, here resprayed in two stage modernity, and adorned with a striking assemblage of Indy Pace Car decals that include bold black stripes that begin at the hood intake slots and conclude at the base of the decklid, the matching body stripe that contours to the wheels openings. Here are the bold lettering that occupies most of both doors, the 500 seal and of course, the iconic winged Indianapolis Motor Speedway logo. White painted wheels were also part of the package and are correct 14-inch Oldsmobile Super Stock II wheels with 215/70R14's. The white canvas roof is in good shape though showing some typical discoloration normally associated with white canvas and the rear glass window is, of course, clear. Two part tail lights are embedded in the chrome bumper above a pair of flared exhaust tips. Imperfections on the car include a scratch in the side stripe, chips in the paint, a small ding, bubbles low on the door, and various hairline cracks in the paint.
Interior
The Supreme features simulated burl wood inserts on the black vinyl door panels along with some standard GM levers, cranks, and lock buttons, and both doors are in great shape. The split bench seat in back is adorned with decorative buttons on the uppers and flanks a generous armrest that folds down and the grained vinyl is clean and fully intact with similar conditions for the back bench. The four spokes on the wheels form an X and front more burlwood on the dashboard, surrounding three simple gauges including a tach and the lower switchgear and AM radio. A center console has been added that includes a two drink holder over clean black loop carpet and Cutlass branded mats. The trunk holds a vintage fitted Oldsmobile rubber mat and is otherwise clean.
Drivetrain
And there it is, the thing that makes this car especially uncommon, the gold blocked numbers matching L74 350ci V8 rated at 310 horsepower, fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor, and mated to a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission which sends power to the 10 bolt rear with 2.56 gears. Power brakes slow the pace and are configured as front disc and rear drum. The bay is what we would classify as clean driver quality with evidence of usage but with nothing out of place or leaking.
Undercarriage
A shining and new looking gas tank is met in reflective properties by the dual exhaust which travels through FlowMaster mufflers before finding their way to the showy chrome tips out back. We note a few drops of oil on the pan and flywheel cover but not a lot of drift of oil film around. The knuckles are clear and there is minimal surface rust on this clean underside. Suspension is standard coil springs up front and a 4 link with coil springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
The only oval track this car will see today is our test loop which is not banked in any way, not one degree. The 350 provides decent power and acceleration might not be 455 level, but respectable, nonetheless. The seats are comfortable and the armrest allows a relaxed posture while piloting this pace setter. Functionally, we find the A/C not working and the wipers only come up about 3 inches before returning to park. Beyond that, everything works on this wonderful traveling billboard! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Oldsmobile paced other Indy racers, notably the 1949 race in a Rocket 88 and then in 1972 with the Hurst/Olds cars, made more famous by a certain curvaceous model who held on to a big shifter during a parade lap. But this 1970 represents a rare example and this one comes with a show car display so all you have to do is sign up for the local shows, put the top down, and make a grand entrance with bold lettering and wild stripes. Hiring a model to ride on the back is optional.
