"STK 3918 1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II
The 1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II 'Dan Gurney Special' is a significant model in American automotive history, embodying the performance innovations of the late '60s. Designed specifically for NASCAR racing, the Spoiler II was a modified version of the standard Mercury Cyclone and featured aerodynamic enhancements that made it stand out on the track. Ralph Moody (of Holman and Moody NASCAR fame) was responsible for the original design and prototype work on this Mercury 'aero' car. Work was done in the company's race shop located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Legendary driver and automotive innovator Dan Gurney played a crucial role in the development of the Spoiler II and his involvement added a layer of prestige to the vehicle. Street versions of the Cyclone Spoiler II were produced in limited numbers, making them rare finds for collectors today. They were sold to the public only because NASCAR's 'homologation' rules required a minimum number of cars (approx. 500 in 1969) be produced and made available for sale to the public. The Cyclone Spoiler II was offered as two unique street trim packages. It is believed that 218 Cyclones were built as the Dan Gurney version and 285 were the Cale Yarborough version.
This fully restored (2010), award-winning Cyclone Spoiler II 'Dan Gurney Special' is one of the nicest examples you will find. (A Marti Report is included with the car.) The exterior is refinished in the original Wimbledon White/Presidential Blue paint scheme and is in outstanding condition. Accents include a rear spoiler, sport mirrors and factory GT styled-steel wheels that mount F70x14 Firestone Wide Oval bias-ply tires. The extended front clip of the Mercury Cyclone is actually 4"" longer than the 'Ford Talladega' version. It was also designed with a steeper angle. The interior has been restored to virtually original condition. Light blue vinyl upholstery is in excellent condition and features include tinted windows, seat belts, wood grained dash inserts and AM sound system.
All '69 Cyclone Spoiler II 'Dan Gurney Special' models are powered by Ford's 351ci/4V Windsor engine that was rated at 290hp. The engine was rebuilt and the original carburetor was replaced with an Edelbrock performance carb. The Windsor is backed by an FMX Merc-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission and 9"" HD open differential w/3.25:1 gearing. (Engine, transmission and differential are date-code correct.) The chassis is equipped with power steering, power disc/drum brakes, sway bar and heavy-duty suspension components. Overall, the 1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II 'Dan Gurney Special' stands as a symbol of race engineering from a bygone era. It is now a sought-after classic, a testament to Gurney's lasting impact on the sport. ALL VEHICLES SOLD ""AS IS""
