Following introduction for 1967 as a slightly bigger and more luxurious Mercury-branded counterpart to the Mustang, the Cougar also carved out an immediate performance-oriented character. The Eliminator option was first offered for the Cougar in 1969, including bold graphics, the heavy-duty Performance Handling Package, and a choice of the new 351 CI Windsor V-8 engine in 2- or 4-barrel tune levels, the 390 V-8, Boss 302, or the 428 CI Cobra Jet V-8 powering this handsomely restored example.
One of just 2,250 Eliminators produced for 1969, this example is accompanied by a Deluxe Marti Report listing its production data, features and options. Presented in its factory-specified colors including Code 9 Bright Yellow paint and Code 5A Black vinyl bucket seats and upholstery, this 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator was built on April 22, 1969 and delivered to North Florida Motor Co. in Jacksonville, Florida. Features and options are numerous, including the potent 428 Cobra Jet V-8 engine, plus an optional Code S 3.50 Traction-Lok rear axle, Code U C-6 Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission, and of course, the Eliminator Package. Other documented factory highlights included Ram Air Induction, power front disc brakes, power steering, hood pins, and an AM radio, Dcor Group, Complete Tinted Glass, and a Remote Control Left Hand Racing Mirror. The first owner purchased this Cougar Eliminator on May 26, 1969.
As offered, this 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator clearly benefits handsomely from a restoration to highly correct appearance and specifications. The body, paint, interior, engine/engine bay and undercarriage are all presented in highly correct condition overall, with the exhaust including a pair of Flowmaster mufflers. Upgrades include the AM/FM radio and Auto Gage oil pressure and water temperature gauges to the center console, plus modern Cooper Cobra Radial GT tires. The restored trunk compartment includes a factory style plaid floor mat and matching cover for the spare wheel/tire. An Edelbrock carburetor provides the air/fuel mix, and the Cougar retains the stock ignition, coil, and distributor, plus the stock intake and radiator. Front and rear spoilers and Argent wheels complete the Cougars visuals. A Deluxe Marti Report documents its original production details, features and options. Appraised value of $145,000 CAD. Canadian tax is not applicable.
