"6471 1968 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible
""Uncap it! The Corvette convertible takes the same basic Sting Ray idea with the lid off and turns into top down driving for two. And there are different ways to put the top down. Soft top or removable hardtop, pick either one as standard or order them together at extra cost. Be yourself! A lot of extra cost features aren't needed to make Corvette driving more enthusiastic, comfortable and convenient. But just in case, for the sports car connoisseur, here's a list of special items that can be ordered."" The 1968 sales brochure then goes on to list dozens of possible options. The variables are endless!
For consignment, a 1968 Chevrolet Corvette convertible in a hot shade of red, a 427ci V8 under the hood, numbers matching transmission, and the optional hardtop to go with it. If you're looking for the ultimate car for a Corvette summer, or for any fair weathered day, take a close look at this classic American sports car.
Exterior
Two stage Torch Red was used when this car went through a restoration about 30 years ago, and it still looks great. The front features a wrap around chrome bumper and grille surround, and the shine is picked up by a bright metal body sill between the wheels, which are 15-inch Chevrolet Rally wheels. Low profile and aerodynamic, the stance is typical Vette with a long hood in front of a short cab and a tail that is abrupt in its vertical termination, highlighted by an upturned spoiler, fully integrated into the bodywork. Functional louvers are incorporated behind the front wheels and allow hot air to escape through the shark-like gill openings. An induction hood was specific to the 427's and dual exhaust emerges from the flat rear fascia. Our tan canvas top and its plastic window are in great condition as are the lens, glass, and emblems. Imperfections are limited to some flex checking in the paint and a few scratches.
Interior
Wonderfully molded saddle colored door cars are sporty, practical, and clean. Leather was an option over the standard vinyl and this car is now fitted with lovely tan, high backed leather bucket seats in a stitched pattern surrounded by color matched piping. Brown deep twist carpeting covers the cargo area and the cabin in fine fashion and the footwell walls are unmarred. A thick 3 spoke steering wheel fronts dual gauges in the sightline of the driver while a wall of five smaller gauges make up the center console where the AM/FM radio still resides. A row of indicator lights leads off on the center console that also houses the climate controls and of course, the shifter, in this case a Hurst unit is just above the printed plaque that reminds you of engine size, horsepower, torque, and compression ratio. The plastic around the dash and center console is in great condition and usually an area that shows wear, but not here.
Drivetrain
A date correct 427ci V8 is under the hood and in absolute show condition. It is fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor and tied to its numbers matching Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission sending power back to 3.36 gears with Positraction. According to the 1968 sales brochure, this is the first American production car to offer disc brakes on all four wheels and although google will argue, this car does have power disc brakes on all four wheels.
Undercarriage
Very, very clean underneath with no surface rust to note and only slight build up around the grease fittings. The dual exhaust encounters stock style mufflers before heading out through sculpted coves in the rear valance via angle cut chrome tips. Coil spring suspension is up front while the rear is more complex with a frame anchored differential, tubular driveshafts, transverse strut rods, and transverse leaf spring.
Drive-Ability
A fair weathered Morgantown day allowed us to experience this pure American sports car in full sun and with a masterful roar. The big V8 pushed this car onto the test loop with obvious power and acceleration on hand, good visibility, and of course, great handling. There are lots of gauges and lights to check and we scrolled our checklist to find only a few faults. The reverse lights, located on the rear valance, are not working nor does the horn. Finally, the brakes are a bit soft and in a car with this much power, that's something to pay attention to.
There's not much more iconic in the car world than a red sports car, whether it comes from Italy or America. Years before emission regulations choked out the power of future Corvettes, the '68 427 was the one to have and maybe you were a 10 year-old who fell in love with its lines. Your paper route could not have paid for one back then and you didn't have a driver's license, but you're in a different place now and this fine example is configured as original and it's your opportunity to live out your 56 year old dream. If it's fate that brought you to this V8, do not hesitate and call.
