"1968 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Coupe
""If you're a true car enthusiast, then you probably know all about Corvair already. If not, you can't help but notice those sleek rear engine fun cars darting about. For 1968, both enthusiasts and lovers of fun cars will find lots to like in the Monza Sports coupe or convertible. Outside, it has that aerodynamic styling with new side marker lights front and rear. For nearly a decade, Chevrolet has built rear engine fun cars. In that time, Corvair has established itself as a firm favorite with U.S. enthusiasts."" From the 1968 brochure.
For consignment, a 1968 Chevrolet Corvair Monza coupe showing 61,460 miles which are not actual. The patina paint mixes with stunning black wheels that makes our eyes glaze over with the possibilities for this car. The guys at the mall had a mock debate about what ""they would do"". One would leave the patina and drive it as is, another would go jet black on the outside, while one even went so far as to say he would create a Yenko Stinger clone. Well, it's not our decision. You are the artist in this studio! All we can do is hand you the keys!
Exterior
Fifteen exterior colors were available in '68 and Ash Gold was one of them, on our car weathered and worn, a mere shadow of its former glory, but glorious in its originality. There are scratches, dents, chips, surface rust, touched up imperfections, a punched hole in the rocker, and general patina. A few of the emblems are missing, while others are still in place. 17-inch American Racing Torque Thrust Special Edition wheels, 5 spoke gloss black with polished rims are in place and the color is picked up by the black painted headlight bezels, distinctive tear drop shaped pieces that help set Corvairs apart, as if the car's shape was not unique enough! The quad tail lights are cool too, here over a dented chrome bumper and a pair of tailpipes in the space left by a missing roll pan.
Interior
The gold door panels have varied textured and designed sections with metal accent buttons that were common for the time and while they show some patina, they are intact and their design flows to the sidewalls of the back, in this case, with no rear bench in place. Up front, vinyl bucket seats include a green driver's seat and a gold passenger seat, both the same style that aligns with the door design. The passenger seat is torn and weathered, so swap meets and Corvair clubs will be your friend as you quest for another green bucket! A gold steering wheel shares the love marks and is missing the horn button but it leads to a clean instrument cluster based in black plastic. An AM radio is in the center and a white knobbed shifter rises from a metal base in the floor which in turn is covered in gold loop carpet in fair condition. The headliner is intact and harboring the shoulder belts, while the frunk is barren and home to the brake reservoir and windshield fluid tank.
Drivetrain
Under the decklid is a 164ci flat 6 rated at 110 horsepower, fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor, and tied to a 4-speed manual transmission. Overall, the engine is clean and the polished pipes are a nice touch. There are wires strewn about but no loose ends, and we note the weather seal is dried out. This car is equipped with drum brakes front and rear.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with some typical surface rust and oil on the pan. A plate covers the center tunnel between belly pans and is clean and intact. Headers come from the engine and soon send the exhaust into a glasspack style muffler right before the tips exit out back. Independent coil spring suspension equips the car front and back.
Drive-Ability
We crank the flat six to life and wow! That's quite a roar more akin to a V8, an impressive bit of mimicry accomplished by the headers and glasspacks. Onto the tarmac we go where the stance is enhanced by the wheels and tires, 205/45ZR17s with a date code of mid 2024. This peppy Chevy delivers a spirited ride, good handling, and as always with this generation Corvair, great visibility. We note the brake lights are not working and the missing horn eliminates its usefulness. Every other workable item in the car operates as it should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A driveable project, a blank slate, a great sounding car with a cool sounding name, (named for an Italian race track!). Here's your gateway drug into the world of classic cars! The Corvair world is a longstanding group of enthusiasts, so you'll have plenty of new friends to help with whatever journey you chose and to share your wins. Or, like many of them, perhaps this would just be an addition to your growing collection of Corvairs! Either way, it's a nice find.
