"1967 Plymouth Belvedere 2 Door Hardtop
Though the Belvedere name is a fanciful one, time was when automakers showed little imagination in naming their wares. In the beginning were models, with a capital M and some letter or number that often made sense only to the manufacturer. Later, Standard, DeLuxe, and Custom (sometimes Master, occasionally Salon) were used to indicate series in ascending order of price and posh, followed by redundancies like Special DeLuxe or, even worse, Super DeLuxe. Some played the numbers game. This usually involved cylinders, (Six, Eight, Twelve, Sixteen, but seldom ""Four""), engine and horsepower, (Auburn's 8-98 of 1931, for instance), and wheelbase in inches, (Packard's One-Twenty). There were also obscurities like production starting date, (Cord 810), or even the hoped for miles on a tank of gas, (Nash 600). So, though the cars may have embodied no end of creative genius, their names were hardly inspired. Then came Plymouth who took notice of the Chevrolet selling wildly withering the name of the ritzy section outside LA named Bel Air. Not to be out done, Plymouth ceased on the equally affluent neighborhood outside of San Francisco named Belvedere, and the rest as they say is history!
Ladies and Gentlemen, may I have your attention. There is a 1967 Plymouth Belvedere hardtop parked in the East Hall of the Classic Auto Mall, and it is up for consignment and sports 99,445 title verified actual miles on the odometer. Would you please go to this car, and take a close look at it, because it is a nice example of said car. Notice the new wheels, snazzy interior, and under the hood is the fabled and reliable Mopar masterpiece, the leaning tower of power 225ci slant 6. It will be awaiting your arrival, and it needs a new home. Thank you for your undivided attention! We now return you back to your regularly scheduled oohing and ahhing.
Exterior
A older respray and clear coating of the correct Silver Metallic is on straight steel panels with nicely minded gaps all around immediatelydraws our attention. However, we do note amateur bodywork, bubbling and some invasive rust making appearances on most of the lowers of this car. Chrome and trim work is all good and chrome and stainless wheel arch moldings connect the stainlessspear that runs the gamut of the rockers and does a beautiful job of breaking up the Silver Metallic painted steel slabs. A pristine front grille flanked by single headlights on either side and a P L Y M O U T H badge is resting on the front of the hood. Take a close look at the side of this car as that B pillar is standing still but looking a lot like its moving forward as it forms a V from the rear glass and back window. Square tail lights are on the back along with another chromed bumper and there is enough room in the trunk to rent out as a 1 bedroom apartment! 15-inch polished American Racing Torque Thurst 5 spoke wheels are on all 4 corners and looking racy as well and are nearly new along with the 215/65R15 raised white letter Cooper Cobra radials from the 43rd week of 2023.
Interior
Nearly perfect gray vinyl door panels greet us with a swing of either door. This silver panel is surrounded by glossy black steel. Within this is a metal armrest with a black vinyl padded topper, a new modern pull out lever door actuator not oft seen, and a window crank all resting within a black crinkle finish vinyl insert. Inside more gray vinyl for the bolstered split front bench and full rear bench. These have black crinkle finish slightly tucked and rolled inserts and are bordered by some gray piping. The dash and all other panels are original to this machine. It presents as a V shaped aluminum panel with a black insert for the rectangular design instrument cluster temp control sliders. The original steering wheel is fronting this dash with its Fratzog emblazoned half moon horn ring. Dash central holds an AM/FM/CD radio along with a mass of buttons and pulls lined up on the lower dash, bordered on the bottom by a chromed trimming stretching from door to door. Above is a nice and tight black headliner nearly perfect, and below is clean black carpeting.
Drivetrain
A lift of the hood and I'm in motor head heaven! (I'm hearing the angels going AHHHHHHHHHHHHH). Here I see to my wandering eyes is the factory correct 225ci slant 6 cylinder, known in the Mopar circles as the leaning tower of power. It has blueblock and valve coverings where paint chipping reveals the factory applied orange paint underneath. Feeding this mill is a freshly rebuilt 1-barrel carburetor with new fuel lines. An A904 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic tranny is on back and power goes rearward to spin the rear axle which weighs in with 3.23 gearing.
Undercarriage
Bottoms up as they say and here we see some surface rusted steel on the untreated components along with undercoated and painted black surfaces that show road dirt and patina but all is structurally sound. Independent torsion bar front suspension and leaf springs on back along with drum brakes all around. A single piped exhaust with a FlowMaster muffler is there for the exhale and making some noise..in a good way.
Drive-Ability
My cohort and I fought tooth and nail to drive this one and it turns out we spent the better part of an hour going over this car and driving it. It played well with nice acceleration, quick bias free braking and good handling. All functions were working as they should and the interior presents as nearly showroom clean clean clean. Id say a great detail job, but this car came in like this so it is loved fer sur! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A beautifully performed restoration with some adequate power under the hood. A really nice interior looking just like the original would have looked, and in snappy tu-tone vinyl. A not oft seen example gracing our Hallowed Halls here at Classic Auto Mall ripe for the picking. Enjoy it as it is or take it to the next level and make yourself a nice and burly GTX clone...the choice is up to you.
