Mother Mopar didn't waste any time and promptly offered the obscenely powerful mastodont in muscle cars, meaning B-bodies only. For consignment, a 1966 Plymouth Belvedere II 2 door hardtop with a title verified 15,118 actual miles, owned by the original purchaser up until 2018, now a two owner car that was barely used and pampered so much that over polishing may have cause some wear to the paint! Powered by the legendary 426, it was sent to Steve Schmidt Racing Engines in Indianapolis but is due for another once over as per our drive-ability report.�
Exterior
If there's one way to dress up a sleeper, it's to have one that's black, then be sure to add 14-inch black wheels and dog dish hubcaps, and keep the tires stock style thin, 205/75R14's will do the trick! The fourth hubcap is included but does not fit the front right wheel. And these donuts are date coded with early 2019 and they are redline tires which hints at something sporty afoot. But the lines of the car are pure pedestrian, a muscle car in sheep's clothing if you will, with stainless body trim pieces spanning each side and a dramatically slanted and tapered C-pillar. The face is pretty standard 60's, single headlights playing bookends to a horizontal grille with inboard marker lights over a laser straight chrome bumper, all in great shape. Out back, square, segmented tail lights gently hug the corners and flank an aluminum panel with reverse lights tucked in and PLYMOUTH proudly displayed and once again, a straight, streamlined bumper that wastes no metal to cover the span. The single stage paint is very nice with a few dings, some paint runs, surface rust where paint used to be on the edge of a wheel opening, some wear through on the sharp edges of the roof and an elongated chip.�
Interior
Light blue and dark blue alternate on the door panels and included a painted header, smooth mid panel, and stitched insert. The kick panel has a plastic piece for protection which has yellowed over time but has kept the door scratch free. And just like your Aunt's sofa in the early 70's, the front split bench and rear seats are covered in protective plastic, also yellowed but we have to believe the seats underneath are near pristine and we're guessing the next owner will want to show them off in their two tone blue vinyl presentation. We continue our travels to 1966 with the dashboard and steering wheel which appear bone stock and in very good condition. You've got the speedometer front and center with the vent control panel to the right and an AM radio in the center for easy access from both sides.� Other than some flaking of silver paint trim on the glovebox, it's basically showroom condition up front and the blue carpet below is consistent with that as is the smooth and tight headliner.� For good measure, the visors have also been hermetically sealed in plastic and preserved, but the trunk stops the streak with signs of usage on the period vinyl mat!�
Drivetrain
Under the hood we go with the monstrous and date correct 426ci Hemi V8 manspreading through the bay, packing a punch equaling a dyno proven 465.5 horsepower and receiving fuel through dual 4-barrel carburetors. Backing it is the date and part number correct Hemi A727 Torqueflite, a beefed up 3-speed automatic transmission with the coveted 2538359 stamped on the pan rail. It sends power to the 8� inch axle with 3.23 gears and Suregrip. Drum brakes are found front and rear. The bay and engine are clean, so pop the hood and let the good times roll!�
Undercarriage
Our consignor states that the original owner sprayed the underneath with electric motor paint to prevent rust, and there are remnants of that paint and thankfully, no rust other than some typical surface rust on exhaust and the driveshaft. Those exhaust pipes connect with an H-pipe then move on to enter stock style mufflers, finally finding some air through tailpipes that terminate under the car. One muffler is blown open at the end and both of them are dented like a couple of tin cans. Suspension is comprised of torsion bars up front and leaf springs in the back.�
Drive-Ability
Our Aunt's couch was sticky and sweaty thanks to its plastic cover, but that green and white upholstery underneath, which was probably soft and comfortable, sure stayed clean! That's what this car is reminiscent of as we take our place to lap this car around the loop. But darn, there's a noticeable engine miss indicating it might need a tune up and carbs brought up to par. It's just not running right, but we did take the time to test functional items like lights, signals, and radio, and everything worked as it should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.��
Not too long ago, this car was running right and laid down a 465.5 horsepower dyno run. Those results, along with the original broadcast sheet and Certicard will come with the car. The buyer will also get the original wheels and tires, a car cover, and a case of 25W50 oil which the engine builder recommends. This black sheep hides a lurking lion under the hood and takes a pedestrian commuter car to the dark side. It's a low mileage legend that will likely be here for a short stay.
