"1966 Ford F100 Short Bed Pickup
""Does the car like ride of Ford pickups mean we've gone soft? Quite the contrary, instead of one, we now have two I-beam axle up front, one for each front wheel, working independently. Shocks at one wheel don't get passed over to the other. Or to the driver. Husky radius rods hold wheel alignment too. Even the engines have big muscle, two husky Sixes have such punch, we had to develop a big new V8 to keep ahead of them. So relax. Enjoy Ford's smooth ride. Just remember that under that velvet is a solid truck, with toughness where it counts. Very comforting."" From a 1996 Ford Truck print ad.
For consignment, a 1966 ford F100 short bed pickup truck showing 87,919 but the true miles are unknown. According to our consignor, other than the paint, this is an all original truck and has never had a dent or body filler. Some of us are about the same age and are in awe of living that long without a bruise or two. But here she is, in a fantastic color palette and ready for a life on the show circuit.
Exterior
Two stage paint takes over for the original and is laid out white sandwiched by Navy Blue delineated with a red pinstripe that picks up perfectly on the 15-inch red steel wheels and red FORD on the hubcaps. A patriotic theme may or may not have been intended here, but these three colors work very well together and on an American truck built to work, it's a fitting display. The grille wears white as well, while a straight front chrome bumper is the only one on the truck, the back going a bit more streamlined with a color keyed roll pan. Some pinstripe script decorates the gas cap, and a white vinyl tonneau covers the bed flatly and is opened via gas struts, exposing a bed that is blue and dusty but otherwise clean. The only imperfection we find is a scrapeon lower edge of the body.
Interior
Navy blue coats the inner doors which are enhanced with a pleated white vinyl insert that provides a visual frame for the door's hardware. The bench seats does the opposite, framing pleated blue vinyl inserts in smooth white, a nice complement to the exterior appearance. Up front, it's all business with a basic steering wheel, black plastic with ribbed spokes, leading to a simple instrument panel featuring a speedometer surrounded by indicators, and two implied cutouts where other gauges might go on a truck in a different trim. A few knobs and the ignition port and that's all you need for an honest day's work! The navy blue carries over across the span of the dash under a black dash pad. Blue looped carpet covers the floor and what Ford called hardboard covers the ceiling at a time when most trucks had bare metal up top.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, an original looking Ford blue 240ci inline six cylinder engine, rated at 150 horsepower and fueled by a 1-barrel carburetor. A 3-speed manual, on the tree of course, sends power to the now legendary Ford 9"" out back with 3.70 gears. Drum brakes will also get you through the day, and they're found on all four wheels.
Undercarriage
Down here where the rubber meets the road, things are in order. Typical surface rust is around, some oil film on the pan but no visible leaks, and those twin I-beams running the length of the truck. The single exhaust flows through a stock style muffler that looks newer than the rest of the system, and quickly dumps a short tailpipe and tip that terminates under the bed. Suspension consists of radius arm and coil springs up front and leaf springs in the rear. Some very minor rust spots are noted on the pinch weld under the driver's door.
Drive-ability
Just a man and his truck. That's what it must've felt like hopping in this simple design and heading to work. It's not blistering fast, but it will get you to where you want to go and the vintage thrill of three on the tree never gets old! Our minimalist truck gets check marks for functionality and as we row this beauty back to the mall save for the brake lights notilluminatingwhen prompted. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Visually appealing, stunningly simple, and purely American. We salute you, F100, for cranking to life nearly every day for nearly 60 years, taking owners to work, play, and now, show. Here's the perfect parade truck, the ideal backdrop for your family's next Christmas card, or the subject of its own photo shoot. Certain vehicles give us that short stay vibe, and this is one of them. Do not sleep on it for too many nights.
