"1960 Chevrolet Impala 4 Door Sedan
""While the new air cooled rear engine Corvair compact stole most of the thunder, Chevrolet had an extraordinary calendar year otherwise with the company selling 1,873,598 units, of which 1,391,485 were 1960 models. The full size 1960 cars were a streamlined version of the rather rounded 1959 design, with simpler grille and squared up sides. The curved fins were now flattened into a ""seagull"" spread wing shape and a missile treatment was featured along the rear quarter panels with white inserts and Impala script."" Thx Hagerty.com
For consignment, a 1960 Chevrolet Impala 4 door sedan with a title verified 45,491 actual miles. According to our consignor, this car was stored for 30 years and when it emerged from hibernation, it was treated to new tires, brake components, suspension components, weatherstripping, engine and tranny seals, battery, exhaust system, springs, hood springs, headliner, carpet, windlace, radio, along with a few rebuilt components. The work has been done for you, now all it needs is a new owner!
Exterior
Stunning two stage Tasco Turquoise contrasts with the Ermine White features that include the roof and the jet stream detail stripe on the sides, all complemented by the white wall tires on 14-inch wheels and polished hubcaps. The sweeping stainless around what is essentially a fuselage shaped cabin begins at the epically curved windshield which brings glass all the way around to the side mirrors, and as the roofline descends, it takes in a curved rear window where the trim delineates a rear quarter window in a fantastic design cue. And speaking of fantastic design, the horizontal fins over the triple lights in the rear are trimmed in stainless that runs parallel to the forward flying jet on the back doors, also trimmed, and when you think classic car, this design reigns supreme. Dual headlights flank horizontal rails on the grille while fender ornaments rise like shark fins on each side. Overall, paints and metalwork are nice, but we do see imperfections noted include some mismatched corrective areas, sections with orange peel, uneven filler or painted rust around a wheel opening, and the roof shows weathered surface rust spots throughout.
Interior
The door panel design has obvious 50's influence with some 60's aspiration with multiple levels of materials and colors, including a blue houndstooth insert in blue vinyl backing. Houndstooth reemerges on the front bench, this time in black and white cloth in a frame of grain textured turquoise and light blue vinyl with the backseat following suit and all wearing bright turquoise seat belts. Two shades of teal also adorn the steering wheel which leads to a cylinder filled dashboard housing five gauges over the perforated aluminum mid panel and while not the chrome filled jukebox look of the 50's, certainly ornate and unique in its own way. An AM/FM radio sits in the center and the soft curves of the dash lead to an Impala branded cove in front of the passenger, above a glovebox that is camouflaged with the design of the dash. A hump mounted center console has been added with the necessary cup holders and storage bin. Blue turquoise carpet lays underfoot protected by matching mats, all under a spotless headliner. The trunk wears the period type vinyl mat and houses a spare.
Drivetrain
A clean motor presents under the hood with clean orange paint on the block of the 283ci V8, rated at 170 horsepower thanks to the 2-barrel carburetor, and mated to a Powerglide 2-speed automatic sending power to the 3.55 gears in back. Power drum brakes are onboard at both front and rear.
Undercarriage
With so many clean components underneath, it's bound to be clean and indeed, outside of the minimal surface rust and occasional drop or two of oil and transmission fluid, the bottom side is trouble free and does not appear to be hosting active leaks. The new dual exhaust shines its way back to encounter stock style mufflers then exiting discretely via steel pipes before the rear bumper. Suspension consists here of coil springs up front and a 3 link with coil springs in the back and as mentioned, our consignor states these springs are new and they sure look it with satiny black paint.
Drive-Ability
What a cruiser! Long and lean with lots of light pouring into the cabin, this feels like the Jetson's dome covered car. The 283 delivers enough power to glide this car over the tarmac with the new tires and suspension absorbing imperfections on our track. It's comfortable and surefooted and all functions on this well sorted car operate as they should during our short excursion. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
If you had to make a list of 10 iconic classic cars based on design alone, surely the 1960 Impala would be on that list. This is a rolling work of art in every objective measure and one we know you'll be proud to glide into every car show. You could park next to a Lamborghini Huracan and likely fetch as many oohs and aahs, especially if the millennials take a second to appreciate the sculpted steel. Well done, Chevrolet! Impalas run fast, so make like a lion and don't let this one get away!
