"1957 Chang Jiang 750 M1M Motorcycle
""There are quite a few motorcycle manufacturers with murky histories, but few are as clouded by the passage of time as Chang Jiang. The lineage of this bike can be traced back to the 1938 BMW R71, which was copied by the Soviets and released in 1942 as the IMZ M72. Come the mid 50s, the Soviets sold the tooling for the M72 to China, and a few years later the Chang Jiang 750 appeared."" Thx Bikeexif.com
For consignment, a 1957 Chang Jiang 750 M1M motorcycle showing 4,366 kilometers but the true mileage is unknown. This bike has been garage kept and owned by our consignor for 22 years and has maintained it well while having the opportunity to run the bike in various parades and win first place trophies at 3 different events.
Exterior
This low wide street bike wears a coat of OD Green paint and comes adorned with U.S. Military gear and equipment and an Army star painted on the sidecar. The forks, gas tank, and frame are green as is the bullet shaped sidecar and fenders. 19-inch wire wheels present with black spokes which is a nice visual match with the headlight housing behind a chrome ring, the black weave patterned vinyl saddles, a black tailpipe, and of course, the handlebar grips. Other chrome elements include the gas tank cap, handlebars, and side mirrors. Saddle leather is used for the aptly named saddle bags which are in new condition, and a similarly colored sheath is used for a rifle in the sidecar. Vinyl padded seat cushions are also in this sidecar with a ribbed rubber mat covering the floor. The paint and metal are in good condition with some surface rust noticed on the rear fender, tail light housing, scratches on the fork, and some minor oxidation on the gas cap.
Functionality
Bar end brake handles will get your attention first as you look upon the control center for the bike and most switches are on the left handle. In the center, a simple speedometer with an odometer is the only gauge provided. The single headlight is flanked by outboard turn signals and in the back, the bike has a large tail light, red center flanked by amber sides. The sidecar has a small red light on the fender.
Drivetrain
On board is a 746cc V-twin with dual PZ24 1-barrel carburetors which our consignor states have been rebuilt with new copper floats. There is a 4-speed manual transmission here which sends power via a shaft drive to the rear wheels and 4.62 gears while drum brakes are front and rear. Dual exhaust emerges from each side of the bike ending in torpedo shaped, stock style mufflers and tail pipe. The engine and exhaust are in driver quality condition.
Undercarriage
Driver quality here as well with road dirt and some residual oil and grease seen about as well as some surface rust on the sidecar belly.
Regardless of its origins, this is one very cool motorcycle that's rarely seen. In fact, exact numbers are unknown but it's estimated that only a few hundred are in the United States. This one is ready for your town's Memorial Day parade, car show, or motorcycle event!
