1951 Dodge Power Wagon
The Dodge M37 3?4 ton 4x4 truck, (G741), was Dodge's follow up to their successful WC Series from World War II. Introduced in 1951, it was used extensively by the United States armed forces during the Korean war. In the 1970s, they were replaced by the Commercial Off The Shelf, (COTS), based 1?4 ton trucks Kaiser M715, (late 1960's), and Dodge's M880/M890 series, (1970's).
Not unlike the Hummer series, the public had a hankering for military style vehicles so Dodge made them available to the public. This big deal Power Wagon has undergone extensive restoration and is the beneficiary of many modern upgrades. I'll grab a few Hummers from inventory, line them up out back and we will take this 40 non-verifiable milePower Wagon and show 'em who's boss!
Exterior
In true 1951 form, this large and in-charge 4 wheel pickup truck with front winch weighs in at nearly 6,000lbs! You can do some serious rescuing and pulling out with the Warn electric winch, however it is currently non-functional. This resides right in front of this truck which has a big heavy duty black painted beam front bumper. A black steel grid grille, squared off design is encased in a rounded over radiator surrounding in Viper Red are leading the way. As with the remainder of the cab which was blasted, and some side panels were renewed, then painted also in the miles deep Viper Red. A nice 40's style rounded over roofline with new split front windshield, single door on each side and a custom made running board which is painted black, and adds a nice contrast to the red body. Rounded over undulating fenders are half surrounding each wheel, and in back these hang off the pristine steel red painted bed sides and new tailgate. The bed is like new oak and has a nice pickled light stain and varnish finish between black steel ribs. LED marker lights and halogen headlamps let them know they need to move out of the way when you power up on their back at night. Red painted two piece wheels have been meticulously restored and now sport 37x12.50-16.5LT run flats inside their knobby exterior surface.
Interior
As I climb past the all steel doors, I see some signs of sophistication in the black tweed with red stitching door panels with corresponding textured red padded vinyl riding along next to the stitched black. A power window actuator box is cozied up to the hinge part of the door. Inside also has like new black tweed seats within a bench, and sporting red stitching. This bench gazes upon a new dash which uses polished stainless steel panels to house the instrumentation of white faced Dolphin manufacturing origin. Also thrown into this tough yet sophisticated mix is a chromed tilt steering wheel with a wood rimmed wheel, a B&M shifter, backup cam and independent wiper motors. Black carpeting fully covers the floors and above is a black utilitarian headliner.
Drivetrain
Under that vented and beautifully badged hood now resides a newly sealed with new oil pump and pan Jeep 360ci V8. It is fed fossils by an Edelebrock intake and 4-barrel carburetor. Power goes through a rebuilt TH400 3-speed automatic tranny, and a Quadra-Trac transfer case. Electrics have all been renewed, and include a GM HEI distributor. Dual exhaust and stainless steel mufflers will add some longevity to that system.
Undercarriage
Also since it was a body off restoration, the frame was blasted and painted black. It supports leaf sprung suspension all around, power drum brakes in back and power disc brakes upfront, power steering and a Dana 44 case for the front, and Dana 60 for the rear. Nuthin's gonna stop us now!
Drive-Ability
This truck lit right up and is on fire from the start, (not literally kids!). Those horses were unleashed on our test track where the truck displays its true power. All in all the drive was sturdy and easy to perform, although I noticed a few issues with the speedo not working, the odometer not clicking the miles off, and the horn, and brake lights are also non functional. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Here we have a military style truck restored to its original glory, and then some. Large and in charge, you can take over in one cool big military style truck. Comfy yet badass, run for ammo and MRE's, before the shit comes down! Sir! YES SIR!
