1951 Alvis TC21/DHC Tickford. Most American collectors are not familiar with the Alvis Marque. In its day, and even in today's world, the Alvis is a highly developed motor car which was found to be in the same price range as the Bentley and other fine cars of that era. This Alvis type TA21 was announced in 1950 looking much like its four cylinder TA14 predecessor but featuring independent front suspension and a new, overhead valve, six cylinder, three litre engine. Styled along classic, pre-war lines, the Three Litre was reckoned by Autocar Magazine to appeal to 'discerning owners who appreciate quality and good handling as well as performance. Tickford body builders built 302 dropheads and most were right-hand drive as is this one. The drophead coupes were announced in the 1951 season and the introduction of open-top models was calculated to boost sales in the United States market where Alvis was beginning to make an impact. Perhaps the best thing about it is that many of the handling characteristics of the sports car have been built into the chassis which combined with a low center of gravity and a reasonable amount of space, make this fine car something of a compromise suited to those who want both family car and sportscar features all in one. Known as having 'Gray Lady Head' (shape) this car has a new crankshaft and bearings just prior to shipping it to the US in March of 2018, new brake cylinders all around (6), a new radiator and a high ratio differential (3.3 to 1) for effortless cruising, Petronics ignition in the distributor so no starting problems, excellent tires and good history.
