"1949 Chevrolet Styleline Sport Coupe
""There's never been a Chevrolet like this. Never a Chevrolet so smartly styled, so advanced in comfort, safety, and performance with economy. It's far and away the finest Chevrolet ever built, the most beautiful buy of all new cars! Two distinctive new body styles in Fleetline and Styleline with 14 grand new models including the DeLuxe and Special"". From the 1949 sale brochure
For consignment, a 1949 Chevrolet Styleline Sport Coupe, showing 60,773 miles but the true miles are unknown. This one has been treated to a distinctive paint job and plenty of new parts to create a roadworthy show car with a fantastically finished interior as well!
Exterior
Forget the drab colors of the late 40's, this one is bathed in two stage Maryland Black on the body and red metal flake on the roof and from the side, the colors and sleek shape of the car work together to create a dramatic piece. This is further enhanced by the red steel wheels, red centered hub caps, and wide white wall tires. One can't help but notice the prominent visor up front and the chrome gravel guard on the bulging rear fenders. But wait, there's more! An airbrushed shell design covers the C-pillar and adds a little flair. The wide car is underscored by its wide set headlights and prison bar grille over a wrap around chrome bumper. A tapered nose leaves a nearly flat plane between it and the fenders, and this design is referenced in the sloping rear, bulbous trunk, and wide set fenders trimmed in stainless. Two giant exhaust pipes emerge from underneath and stretch well beyond the bumper creating a more aggressive stance they could not have imagined in 1949. Condition wise, the paint and metalwork is fantastic. There's an inclusion on the rocker panel, an area of orange peel, and an area of cracking paint.
Interior
Smooth red door panels with polished trim present cleanly and hint at the level of quality we might expect from the rest of the interior. And indeed the red leather split bench is immaculate with barely compression on the driver's side, while the rear bench and red sidewalls are a monochromatic sight to see! The black steering wheel is wrapped in a red vinyl cover with metal flake and shares the column with a tachometer in front of a red faced center multi gauge with silver trim while maintaining their deco font in white, and this same treatment has been applied to the square clock on the right side of the black painted dash. Do you see a theme here? Well, it continues to the floor with a red handled Hurst shifter over black carpet with red vinyl trim, and everything is clean. A red vinyl headliner looms brightly above and the trunk has red walls, a gray floor mat, and a spare tire that matches the mounted ones.
Drivetrain
The show continues when the curtain goes up on the engine, which now has a starring role with red, chrome, and black carefully coordinated under the hood without diversion. This is a rebuilt 216.5ci inline 6 cylinder with a 1-barrel carburetor and a 3-speed manual sending power to the 4.11 gears in back. Drum brakes occupy the front and rear wheels. Our consignor states the gas tank, fuel pump, lines are new along with the throw out bearing and water pump. Brakes and their lines have been done as well.
Undercarriage
Even on great cars, this is where things often fall apart. But this car maintains its attention to detail with a very clean underside, dominated by smooth red oxide primer and clean components. It presents like a fresh build with minimal surface rust and no wetness anywhere. A Williams exhaust manifold sends dual exhaust under the car where the pipes meet glasspack style mufflers then head straight to the back where they exit in polished pipes. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf springs in the rear.
Drive-Ability
This is a good sized car with big windows for great visibility although the visor tends to shrink the windshield a bit, but also keeps the sun out. It's a great looking car sitting still, and even better looking in motion with sweeping rear fenders that seem to flow with the wind as the bulbous pointed nose urges forward. We note the horn, speedometer, and odometer are not working but all other functions provided in the car operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Receipts and a book outlining the build of this car will accompany it to the next owner so you'll have a full appreciation of what went into it. It's one thing to admire a car from afar, it's another to get intimate knowledge of exactly what went into it. This is the complete package. A fairly uncommon car in an exciting spec, and ready for cruises and shows, or simply Sunday drives!
