That Hudson's early postwar "victory lap" also proved to be a glorious swansong is the stuff of legend, as the feisty independent briefly set the pace on road and race track with the famous "step-down" models before being overwhelmed and consigned to oblivion by the onslaught of the Big Three. In similar vein Hudson's last-of-line early postwar pickups also sign-posted a future the company would play no part in.
Ford and GM pickups of the time were bulbous and puritanically utilitarian to the point of hair-shirt austerity. By contrast, Hudson's cab pickup looked like it came out of a custom shop, sporting the flowing fenders of the car-derived front end replete with chrome trim and a well-appointed cabin with automobile-style comfort and refinement, complete with Hudson's feature 30-hour clock. It would be many years before Ford and GM turned this trick with the Ranchero and El Camino. Yet, Hudson's cab pickup was no mere go-to-town Saturday night cruiser; it was also a tough workhorse with heavy-duty suspension and a superstructure supported by the over-engineered frame rails and cross members that underpinned its automobiles. The drawback was that the Hudson cost more than agricultural work-a-day rivals, and 1947-when the company produced just 2,917 Super Six pickups-brought truck production to an end.
Finding an example was no easy matter for the vendor, who spent years tracking down this final-year Super Six before embarking on what has clearly been a labor of love, right down to sourcing the correct Zenith tube radio.
Its comprehensive restoration has elevated it further through sensitive customization that preserves the essence of the original. The 2-inch lowering, filled seams, oak bed and trim, whitewall Coker tires on steelies with baby moons, and just enough metal flake in the Firethorn Red Pearl paint to accentuate the curves are just some of the flourishes. That this Hudson needed less in the way of adornment and mods to be a recent custom show winner only emphasizes how much more you got in 1947 with a pickup that was already a road-ready "factory custom" the day it rolled off the Detroit production line.
