1938 Chevrolet Master Deluxe 2 Door Sedan
Harley Earl's influence really took hold in 1933 when a certain uniformity, often called corporate appearance, became standard at General Motors. One of the primary design elements was putting the radiator behind a front facade where the grille featured prominently. In 1938, nearly 303,000 Master Deluxe models were sold. While there are many more choices today, there are few cars that sell that many models worldwide in 2024.
For consignment, a 1938 Chevrolet Master Deluxe 2 door sedan with a steel body, fiberglass fenders and running boards, air conditioning, power steering, power windows, and a 350ci crate engine putting out 290 horsepower. This juicy orange skate comes to us with 8,891 miles on the odometer which can not be verified as the title reads mileage exempt.
Note: This vehicle is sold with a Pennsylvania reconstructed branding on the title
Exterior
The tall statue of the Master Deluxe has instant presence and it's multiplied exponentially by the bright orange paint that shines bright over the entire body. Bumperettespresent a streamlined suggestion of front protection while the polished trim over the engine cover vents provide the only contrasting trim on the side. Tinted windows reside under the long, rounded roofline and the epic humpback decklid protrudes between fenders with frenched taillights. TrueSpoke wire wheels occupy the corner in classic fashion with 14-inchers up front and 15-inchers out back giving this big street rod a slightly raked stance. The color keyed grille is quite extraordinary as it is sculpted around the body work which includes an arrow shaped base for the external headlights. It wears a polished center piece, a Chevrolet nameplate and is just below a simple, streamlined hood ornament. Paint and metalwork are fantastic. Imperfections include touched up scratches and chips, bubbling, and rock chips on the front.
Interior
The gray painted window frame on the inside is complemented by gray cloth door panels, alternating smooth panels with vertically stitched inserts, a modern armrest, electric window switches, and more traditional hardware for opening and the vent window. Front bucket seats are also in gray cloth and in decent condition. The driver's seat shows some compression and is missing the hinge hardware cover. In back, the lap of luxury contains a bench seat enveloped in gray, including the sidewalls. A GT steering wheel fronts a gray painted dashboard with orange pinstripe accents housing a series of AutoMeter gauges and indicator lights. The tilt column shares some space with an Equus tachometer while in the center of the dash we find an AM/FM/CD unit accented in red and with AUX capability. A Lokar shifter is floor mounted where we find low pile gray carpet in good condition. The textured gray headliner is also in nice shape and the trunk now contains a fuel cell and battery box.
Drivetrain
A very clean engine awaits us behind the covers and it's a 350ci V8 putting out 290 horsepower and fueled by an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor and set into motion by a rebuilt TH400 3-speed automatic transmission which sends power to the rear axle with 3.08 gears. Disc brakes are supplied up front and drums in the rear.
Undercarriage
The underside presents in very good condition with minimal surface rust and no errant fluids. The dual exhaust starts at headers and encounters a pair of Turbo mufflers just before exiting with downturned tips under the car. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
The comfortable cabin is a great place to spend some time as we crank the 350 up and with a guttural growl, we move onto the test loop where the car performs very well. Solid tracking, good power, and decent handling. All operational items work as they should save for the light on the speedometer not being hooked up, there are no bump stops on the suspension and the fuel gauge can sometimes be erratic and we return this orange chariot to the mall where it will be on full display. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
It's a well done street rod in blazing orange paint and air conditioning for those summer rides to rod meets and car shows. Pop the engine covers as the motor is clean and show worthy and enjoy this Master Deluxe for years to come. Orange you glad you read the entire thing?
