1867 Roper Steam Cycle Replica
Sylvester Roper, (1823-1896), created the first successful motorcycle by combining the bicycle with a coal fired boiler engine. Self propulsion resulted and Roper continued to create and develop his steam powered motorcycle and other innovative ideas. This model had a rigid forged iron fork and frame with a solid handlebar and wood grips. The original motorcycle is locked in a storage room at the Smithsonian Museum. (info provided by the consignor)
For consignment, an 1867 Roper Steam Cycle replica, an astounding, museum quality recreation from notable mechanical artist William Eggers whose work has been featured in Hemmings Motor News, museums, and other notable venues. The incredible tribute does not run but closely replicates the construction of Roper's original creation.

A steel band encircles each ash spoked wagon wheel which was turned on a lathe along with the hubs, hand grips, and foot pegs. Red oak was used on the rest of the bike and the steel frame is wrapped in a wood veneer for accurate aesthetics. The rider sits forward and would have controlled the speed by twisting the hand grips, allowing steam into the cylinders, the pistons pumping as the rear wheel turned. The boiler is made of rolled brass and on a functioning bike, charcoal would have been fed through a round opening and smoke would have billowed from the chimney behind the seat. Our seat is made of black leather, artfully crafted to look aged, just as the rest of the bike.
This is a fantastic piece for display and a peek into the earliest, self propelled two wheeler ever produced. If you have a motorcycle or transportation museum, think of the possibilities! If you have a motorcycle collection, or sell them, this one might be the topic of more conversations with visitors. You'll never be able to get a real Roper, but this accurate depiction is a fine representation and a grand piece of American transportation history!
