The Firebird, built and produced by Pontiac, was designed as a pony car to compete with the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, and Mercury Cougar. Introduced in February of 1967, the Firebird was in production until 2002. The name "Firebird" had been used by GM for the General Motors Firebird for 1950s and 60s concept cars as well, but took on new notoriety with Pontiac. Of the 1969 Pontiac Firebirds produced, 74,673 were two-door coupes, 11,641 were two-door convertibles, 689 were trans AM coupes, and only 8 were trans AM convertibles.
StyleSome people think the 1969 Pontiac Firebird was a "Pontiacized" version of the Chevrolet Camaro, but the Firebird did have its own distinctive and attractive attributes. The 1969 Firebirds featured new, lower-body styling, a prominent chrome "bird beak" grille, and a 108-inch wheelbase. Additional changes included theft prevention steering column ignition, steering gear shift interlock, variable-ratio power steering, and single-piston caliper optional disk brakes. Unlike previous years, the Koni shocks and optional wire wheel covers were unavailable for the 69's. Compared to its 1967 or 1968 predecessors, the 1969 Firebird was about an inch longer overall and roughly 60 pounds heavier.
Under the hood, the 1969 Firebird was basically the same as previous model years, with slight power upgrades. Ultimately, the 350 HO was upgraded to 325 horsepower and a 400 Ram Air IV with 345 horsepower was introduced.
