The first Mercury introduced postwar was the Mercury Eight, introduced in 1949, and it featured a flathead V8 engine that produced slightly more power than the newly designed 1949 Ford. Soon after in 1950, a high-end two-door Monterey coupe was introduced as part of the Mercury Eight line. This model heralded in the third generation of Mercury vehicles. It was styled after the Ford Crestliner, the Lincoln Lido coupe, and the Lincoln Cosmopolitan Capri coupe and was intended to compete with the hardtop coupes recently introduced by General Motors in 1949. The 1950 Mercury Montereys remained a part of the Eight line until 1952, when it became its own series.
StyleThe 1950 Mercury Monterey's design features were developed under the guidance of William Schmidt, whose Lincoln-Mercury Division stylists orchestrated a facelift of the 1949 design created by Eugene Gregorie. The 1950 Mercury Montereys came with either canvas or vinyl tops, and other standard features included leather seats/headliners, wool carpets, chrome-plated interior moldings, a two-toned dashboard, dual outside rearview mirrors, full wheel covers, and a gold-winged hood ornament. While the cars themselves were not convertibles, the top styling simulated the appearance of a convertible, though with a pillared roofline. Paint colors were limited, and most Montereys featured color-coordinated interiors to match the external look and feel.
