The second-generation Camaros were introduced in February of 1970 and in production until 1981. Still based on the F-body platform like the generation before it, the new Camaro was similar to its predecessor, with a unibody structure, front subframe, and an A-arm front suspension. Despite facing sales problems in previous years, the 1973 Camaro sold nearly 100,000 units. Unlike the first generation Cameros, the second generation did not feature a convertible option. Engineers of the second generation Camaros describe them as being more of "A Driver's Car" than the previous generation.

Dubbed "Super Huggers", the second-generation Camaros had the same basic mechanical layout as the first-generation models, as well as featured a unibody structure that utilized a front subframe, A-arm and coil spring front suspension, and rear leaf springs. The chassis and suspension of the second generation models offered better performance and comfort, including significant improvement in areas of sound-proofing, ride isolation, and road-holding.

Each style change that occurred on the Camaro from 1970 through 1973 follows up from the previous year, meaning there will be certain elements that overlap and others that don't. It is the combination of style elements that make the model year of the Camaro apparent. The 1973 Camaro has a larger grille pattern like the 1972 and features the shortened "Camaro" emblem on the trunk like the 1971 and 1972 models. However, it is the only year with the super-strengthened, large bumper supports.
