Virtually unchanged in outward appearance in 35 years, the Mazda Miata MX5 is the best sports car value on the market in terms of sheer driving pleasure per dollar. The MX-5 combines simple, timeless design, great performance, easy maintenance, great economy, and an endless supply of fun in a package that looks good, and performs better than it looks.
This car is offered for sale with just over 40,000 gentle miles on the odometer after nearly 25 years on the road a bittersweet experience, since the owner enjoys the car so much. Unfortunately, the sale of its storage garage forces sale of this outstanding little sports car.
Often referred to as the NB, the second generation Miata was redesigned from the ground up in 1999, with a long list of improvements over the earlier models. This car was more powerful, the body more rigid, and styling was refreshed without substantially diluting the original Miata profile.
In fact, when compared to the first generation MX5, even the brand new 2023 model still retains most of the profile this little roadster first presented to the world. Mazda has stayed the course with a great design – and sales of well over a million Miata roadsters proves their strategy, like the quality of the car, to be topnotch.
The Miata MX5 is a responsive car that handles beautifully. The twin-cam engine makes more power and torque than previous models. The 1999 engine had a new cylinder head design with improved fuel injection and a higher compression ratio.
The 5-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and the clutch grabs firmly. The NB body does not flex, and improved steering and suspension provide great stability when cornering. It has four-wheel disc brakes for sure stops, too.
The features of this car include a roomy trunk space, an optional, a retracting wind blocker which reduces buffeting when the power windows are down, a concert hall quality 200-watt Bose audio system, heat and air conditioning, optional Nardi steering wheel, and the black fabric top, which only requires unfastening two latches to single-handedly raise or lower it, has a glass rear window.
The interior is finished in cloth, since the car has usually been driven with the convertible top down, and a leather interior would get too hot for comfort in the hot desert sun of Las Vegas. There are no flaws in the upholstery – no rips, tears, stains, or wear in the fabric. The exterior Velocity Red paint shows very little evidence of its time on the road.
This car has been well maintained and regularly serviced. The underside is relatively clean and free of any rust or corrosion, and the radial tires have over 95% of tread remaining. This trouble free car requires nothing but a new owner to enjoy driving it.

This car was purchased from dealer who stated “all recommended maintenance had been performed.” It is a very low mileage vehicle with just 41800 miles, so there hasn’t been a scheduled service interval for the timing belt and there is no water pump issue.
Has the timing belt and water pump been changed?
