1988 BMW M6 (M635-CSi)

This 1988 BMW M6, also known by its revered designation M635-CSi, stands as a testament to an era when driving wasn’t just transportation but an exhilarating experience. Draped in its striking Zinnoberrot Red, this M6 has covered an odyssey of 189,760 miles, each one steeped in the stories of its journey, meticulously recorded by owners who cherished it like a member of the family. This is more than a car; it’s a piece of BMW’s storied past, brought to life with just a turn of the key.

GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS:

  • 1988 BMW M 6 (M635CSi) VIN# WBAEE141632562371
  • M Registered
  • 3.5L Inline 6
  • Zinnoberrot Red

Step into the cabin, and you’re greeted by a Lotus Tan and White leather interior that whispers tales of classic elegance, now accentuated by a newly refreshed carpet and upholstery. While age has left its traces—a few chipped spots on the paint, a slight scrape on the front valence, and a minor split on the dash—the overall presence of this M6 is that of a timeless classic, resilient and alluring.

Mechanically, this beauty has aged with grace, with its engine being rebuilt down to the long block at approximately 160,000 miles. The rebuilt powerhouse under the hood has kept this BMW roaring with confidence. It’s true, like any elder statesman, it carries the occasional quirk: a whisper of oil from the valve cover near the firewall and a lazy power steering line that hints at the years of service. But these are minor notes in an otherwise symphonic performance.

SPECIAL UPGRADES:

Over its lifetime, this M6 has seen thoughtful enhancements that respect its legacy while giving it a modern edge. Upgrades include a performance suspension for sharper cornering, a striking set of 17-inch E34 M5 Throwing Star wheels (with the original 15-inch basketweave wheels included), and an SSBC big brake kit paired with slotted stainless steel rotors for stopping power befitting the car’s pedigree. The Supersprint header-back exhaust ensures that this BMW sings in a rich, throaty voice that echoes the Autobahn. Inside, the driving experience is elevated by a custom Kenwood sound system, professionally installed, yet allowing the original audio system to join the package.

A SPECIAL NOTE FROM THE SELLER:

This M6 is not just a machine; it’s a chronicle of passion and preservation. Each of its three owners, who kept the car in trusted hands for decades, passed it along only when life necessitated.

That time has now come to me, with less of a need for a 2 door manual sports car. I am looking for the next owner who will hopefully love (and drive) the hell out of this car and add another 100,000 miles to the odometer.

As the current guardian, I find myself reluctantly ready to see it join a new steward’s collection—a place where its story can continue to unfold, ideally with new roads under its wheels and new chapters added to its log.

KNOWN IMPERFECTIONS:

There are a few quirks any enthusiast should prepare for:

  • Minor Fluid Leaks from the Power Steering Line and the Valve Cover near the Firewall
  • A flashing SRS airbag light from a steering wheel swap that, despite BMW’s assurance, remains on
  • An antenna with intermittent moods
  • Tires that date back to 2012 that yearn for fresh replacements
  • The 7-year-old battery cranks faithfully but suggests an upgrade in the coming years.

Yet, this car is not just being sold; it’s being passed on, complete with a trove of treasures—a set of original BBS basketweave wheels, the factory radio and speakers, two keys, CoCoMats, comprehensive factory repair manuals, and a history of 45 service records dating back to its birth year.

This 1988 BMW M6 awaits its next chapter. For those ready to appreciate it, love it, and push it to conquer another 100,000 miles, the road beckons. Cheers to the journey ahead.

Interior looks fabulous. Can you tell me what is original and what has been replaced? Is the leather on the front seats similar to original? Or is it bonded leather? What can you tell me about originality of the paint and Carfax? Thank you very much.

    • rtl221LH says:

Thanks for the question. I purchased the car from the owner that had the interior redone to factory look and specs which included; both front seats, front door cards, rear seat, rear side panels, headliner and console, rear window shelf. I’m pretty sure that it is manufacture’s quality leather, and it is in very good shape, no cracks or splits
As far as the paint, it was resprayed in original color shortly before I bought it.
Regarding the car fax, I do not have any specific info outside of the fact that I’m pretty sure the passenger side front fender was damaged and replaced to factory specs

    • BigDutchman says:
