Ford launched the third-generation Mustang in 1979 on the Fox platform, introducing a longer wheelbase that provided more interior space, a roomier trunk, and better engine bay access. Early on, it was offered only in notchback and fastback body styles—the convertible wouldn’t return until 1983, marking its first appearance in nearly a decade. The GT trim had also disappeared since 1969 but made a comeback in 1982, following years of Mach 1 and Cobra variants. Early Fox-body Mustangs had a distinctive design with quad rectangular headlights and angular front fascias. Over the years, the grille design evolved, and by 1983, the Ford blue oval replaced the pony emblem up front. Electronic fuel injection became standard for V6 and V8 models in 1986.

The 1986 GT package came fully loaded with performance and comfort features. It included a 5.0L High-Output V8 engine producing 200 horsepower and 285 lb-ft of torque, a performance-tuned suspension, 15×7″ 10-hole cast aluminum wheels with VR-rated tires, and a 5-speed overdrive manual transmission. It also featured a Traction-Lok 8.8″ rear axle with 2.73 gearing, quick-ratio power steering, a heavy-duty battery, articulated sport seats, and other conveniences like a tilt steering column, power fuel door release, digital clock, and full tinted glass.

This particular 1986 Ford Mustang GT Convertible is an incredible survivor, finished in its original Dark Grey Metallic paint over a beautifully preserved two-tone Charcoal and Grey cloth interior. The factory Black vinyl convertible top with rear glass is still in place and power-operated. Loaded with options, it features power windows and locks, cruise control, air conditioning, a premium AM/FM/Cassette sound system with EQ, and a convenience lighting group.

With only 10,499 original miles, this Mustang is one of the finest, most well-preserved examples you’ll find. It has had just one owner since new, originally purchased from Roberts Ford in Illinois on December 23, 1985. It’s been garage-kept, pampered, and never driven in poor weather. The car was regularly cleaned, maintained, and kept on a battery tender for preservation.

The level of documentation included is astounding: original window sticker, build sheet, warranty ID plate, factory MSO, original title copy, all manuals, dealership keychain, driveaway tag, Marchal fog light covers, showroom brochure, unused Ford car cover, convertible boot with bag, and full service and insurance history.

To protect the original wheels and tires, they were removed at 8,000 miles and replaced with color-matched 1987 5-spoke Mustang GT wheels—also included in the sale along with new center caps and boxed service parts. Everything on the car works as it should: A/C, cruise, clock, stereo, lights, horn, and power accessories.
