This 1962 Studebaker Gran Turismo Hawk showcases European design influences paired with fantastic options, making it a standout American classic. By the early 1960s, Studebaker was facing significant challenges, with a sales drop of over 20% in 1961 compared to 1960. To put this into perspective, Studebaker sold 103,000 units in 1961, while Chevrolet sold 343,000 Bel Air models alone that same year. In an effort to revitalize the brand, Studebaker’s president, Sherwood H. Egbert, enlisted the help of renowned industrial designer Brooks Stevens to restyle the aging Hawk line. The result was the sporty yet luxurious, modern yet timeless 1962 Gran Turismo Hawk, which debuted on October 29, 1961, during an advertisement on the “Mr. Ed” television program. The next day, it was available in Studebaker dealerships nationwide.

The 1962 Gran Turismo Hawk, while based on Raymond Loewy’s 1953 Starliner Coupe, appeared completely new from nearly every angle. The front featured a stamped grille with a heavy chrome surround, giving it an elegant European look. The side profile was modernized with a flattened, squared-off roofline, the removal of side beltline trim, and the addition of bright rocker panel moldings. Stevens also eliminated the Hawk’s B-pillar, returning it to an open hardtop design not seen since 1958. At the rear, the outdated fins were removed, and the decklid received updated trim with a simulated grille design. The rear window was recessed for a more modern appearance, completing the exterior transformation.

Inside, the GT Hawk’s interior was significantly upgraded. Bucket seats, introduced in 1961, were redesigned for 1962 and included a center console with a storage compartment and ashtray. The dashboard featured a new woodgrain-trimmed, three-panel instrument cluster, evoking the feel of an airplane cockpit with a touch of European luxury. Despite its improvements, only 9,335 GT Hawks were produced in 1962, making this model a rare piece of automotive history.

This particular Gran Turismo Hawk comes from a southern-based collector who meticulously cared for it. Under the hood is a 289 cubic inch Studebaker V8 engine with a single 2-barrel carburetor, producing 210 horsepower when new. Paired with an automatic transmission, this GT Hawk is easy to drive and delivers a throaty exhaust note through its dual exhaust system. The car is equipped with power steering, making parking effortless, and features chrome outside mirrors for improved visibility. It rides on whitewall radial tires mounted on painted steel wheels with full Studebaker wheel covers, offering both style and comfort on the road. The exterior is finished in stunning Ermine White paint, complemented by excellent brightwork.

The interior of this 1962 Studebaker Gran Turismo Hawk is equally impressive. The front bucket seats, center console, and rear bench seat have been restored in red upholstery, providing a European-inspired aesthetic. Matching red door panels, carpeting, and a black padded dash maintain a stock appearance. The three-panel woodgrain-trimmed instrument cluster includes a 120 MPH speedometer, 6,000 RPM tachometer, oil pressure gauge, amp gauge, temperature gauge, fuel gauge, clock, odometer, and turn signal indicators. Additional features include a perforated metal dash, glove box, push-button AM radio, and various controls.

Whether you’re a first-time collector or adding to an existing collection, this 1962 Studebaker Gran Turismo Hawk is an excellent choice.
