This 1962 Studebaker Champ 1/2 Ton Pickup is a well-restored classic with a southern history, ready for the road. When the Champ debuted in 1960, Studebaker was riding a brief wave of success thanks to strong sales of the Lark. With the extra cash flow, the company reinvested in its truck division, which had a long history but was struggling at the time. The Champ was Studebaker’s new light-duty pickup, borrowing elements from the Lark to create a fresh design. By 1962, Studebaker’s financial troubles had worsened, leading to the company’s eventual exit from the auto industry in 1966. While the Lark received styling updates that year, the Champ retained its previous look, with the most significant change being the now-standard “Spaceside” box, while the older P1 box with exterior fenders remained optional.
This particular Champ comes from a southern collector who owned it for 25 years. Under the hood, it features a 259.2 cubic inch V8 with a single 2-barrel carburetor, producing 180 horsepower. Paired with a Flightomatic automatic transmission, it’s easy to drive and enjoy. Unlike many Champs, which were bought as basic work trucks, this one is equipped with several desirable options, including an exterior right-hand rearview mirror for improved visibility and factory turn signals—still an uncommon feature at the time.
The all-steel 8-foot “Spaceside” bed is in excellent condition, lined with a protective bed liner and enhanced with wooden stake sides and a diamond-plate toolbox. It rides on P225/75R15 radial tires mounted on painted steel rims with full wheel covers and beauty rings, delivering both style and a smooth ride. The truck has been refinished in eye-catching Apache Red, making it stand out wherever it goes.
Inside, the cabin maintains a clean, stock look. The bench seat has been reupholstered in red and gray vinyl, while the dash, door panels, and steering wheel remain in great shape. The dash features a 120 MPH speedometer, temperature and fuel gauges, and an AM radio.
Whether you’re adding to a collection or looking for your first classic truck, this 1962 Studebaker Champ is a fantastic choice, blending vintage charm with drivability.
