This is a stunning example of a rare 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 “G” CODE 406/405HP Tri-Power four-speed convertible. This Galaxie 500 was recently the recipient of a comprehensive frame-off restoration by Donald Allen, known as “Mr. Galaxie,” whose shop in Clarksville, Georgia, is renowned for award-winning restorations of Galaxies. Jacky Jones assisted in the restoration, and together, they bring unparalleled expertise in Ford performance cars.

In early 1962, Ford was the only low-priced marque without an engine larger than 400 cubic inches. Compared to the 421-cube Pontiacs, 413 Plymouths and Dodges, and even the 409 Chevys, Ford’s largest offering was a 390 cubic-inch engine. Despite the “Thunderbird Special” 390 being rated at 401 gross horsepower, Ford needed something bigger.

For 1962, Ford introduced its 406-cubic-inch V-8 as a racing homologation special. This engine used the 390’s 3.785-inch stroke but was bored out to 4.13 inches, resulting in two versions: a 385-horsepower four-barrel and a 405-horsepower tri-power variant. Both featured 11.4:1 compression, cast headers, and a low-restriction dual exhaust.

Any 406-powered Galaxie came with a Borg-Warner T10 four-speed transmission, 15-inch wheels, heavy-duty suspension, four-wheel drum brakes, and a high-capacity radiator. The package also included a 3-inch-wide driveshaft and a new-for-1962 rear axle with a 9-inch ring and pinion.

The engine callout on a fender badge was a subtle clue to the car’s power. Only those in the know would recognize whether the car pulling up to the light was a standard 352-powered model or a powerful 406, ready to surprise many when the light turned green.

Finished in the correct Chestnut Metallic with a Chestnut Crush vinyl interior, this car’s color combination is absolutely striking. The paint is mirror-like, and the body is laser straight. The chrome trim and brightwork glisten in the sun. The engine compartment is impressive, and the undercarriage is pristine. This is a very strong running car that drives great and demands attention wherever it goes.
