Inspired by the growing popularity of stylish pickups like the Chevy Cameo and Ford Ranchero, the El Camino made its debut in late 1958 as a new kind of vehicle that combined the comfort of a car with the practicality of a truck.

Built on a passenger car chassis, the El Camino borrowed heavily from Chevrolet’s 1959 car lineup, sharing the same bold front grille, dual headlights, and sweeping rear tailfins with cat-eye taillights.
