1997 Chevrolet Camaro SS – Rare SLP-Built Supercharged Beast

The Camaro SS made its return in 1996, bringing back true muscle car performance and excitement. Unlike standard Camaros, the SS models were not built entirely at the factory—GM contracted Street Legal Performance (SLP) in New Jersey to handle the high-performance upgrades. Each SS began life on the St. Theresa assembly line before being shipped to SLP, where it received its signature modifications, including a functional Ram Air hood, ducktail spoiler, cold air intake, SLP exhaust, upgraded suspension, wheels and tires, and SS badging. After the conversion, the cars were sent to dealers for delivery to customers.

The 1997 model year saw a total of 54,972 Camaros produced, but only 3,137 (5.7%) were SS models (RPO R7T). This particular 1997 Camaro SS is even more exclusive—one of just 124 red coupes built with an automatic transmission and T-tops. Adding to its rarity, it features SLP’s optional R1 compound tires, which were installed on only 34 SS Camaros that year, making it a possible one-of-one as equipped.
