1970 Buick GS 455 Stage 1

One of 2,465 Stage 1 hardtops produced in 1970, this car underwent a meticulous body-off-frame rotisserie restoration in 2019. It features a built date code 455 cu in Riviera engine (non-numbers matching) and a correct 3-speed automatic transmission. This car is listed in the GS Registry and appears to retain its original metal.

Time was taken to make the body laser straight, with all the body gaps fitting precisely. The paint was laid out evenly, and the clear coat is polished like glass. Although the paint is now five years old, it looks freshly done, showing no cracks, bubbles, or shrinkage. The jambs are just as slick, even up by the hinges. The white painted top looks great against the red body. All the brightwork has been restored, with replated chrome and polished stainless steel. The glass is crystal clear all around, with a new front windshield. The power windows work effortlessly and are perfectly aligned. All weather strips and window seals were replaced.

The car is equipped with power steering, power brakes (4-wheel disc), power windows, and working air conditioning. It also comes with a new Red Top Optima battery, stainless steel brake lines, and a new Engineered Cooling Products aluminum radiator.

Interior:
The inside was completely gutted to a shell and Dynamatted under the carpet. The dash was disassembled and restored, with gauges sent out and restored, and chrome plastic trim replaced. The knobs, vents, modern radio with Kicker speakers, and glovebox liner are all like new. It features factory gauges and a tachometer, with auxiliary gauges under the dash for temperature, voltage, and oil pressure. It has a 3-spoke steering wheel on a tilt column, new upholstery on the seats and door panels, and replaced headliner and visors. Everything from the carpet to the headliner was replaced, fitting and functioning properly.

Underside:
The body was removed from the frame and flipped on a rotisserie. The chassis was stripped down bare, prepped, and powder-coated. Every part of the suspension and steering was rebuilt. The brake system was completely restored with new lines, hoses, and an e-brake assembly. The fuel system was entirely replaced, including the tank, straps, sending unit, and lines. It has a new reproduction exhaust system. The underside of the engine and transmission is spotless, with all related parts in pristine condition.

What is a Stage 1?
Buick’s top performance package included larger valves with heavier springs, a re-jetted carburetor, a recurved distributor, a high-lift cam, an upgraded oiling system, a high-volume fuel pump, heavy-duty cooling, and a posi rear end. A/C cars came with 3.42 gears.

The odometer shows 26,279 miles, with only 1,680 miles on the restoration. Riding on mint-condition GS mags wrapped in raised white letter Cooper Cobra radial tires (295/50 R15 in front and 245/60 R15 in back), this restored GS is a stunner. It will fit into any discerning collection, and if collecting isn’t your bag, this beauty will impress your friends and tear up the pavement.

Hello, Has this unit ever drag raced if so do you know the times?

  • goracin442 says:

I understand it is a replacement 455 from a Riv, was the engine built to Stage 1 spec’s? Still have the original Stage 1 heads/carb etc? Details/receipts on the engine build?

    • vvncc says:

As explained to me by the previous owner, the car’s current engine was built to Stage 1 spec. It runs harder than Stage 1 cars I’ve driven in past years. I have not decoded the heads or carb. etc. The previous owner requested the receipts from the restorer whom he bought it from but they didn’t produce them as promised.
