Beautiful Mercedes Euro 280SL. With a special ground effect package and the optional factory 5 speed transmission, it is a rare example of this timeless Mercedes Roadster. Finished in “Signal Red” it features a black interior that shows very little wear. It is powered by the bullet proof 2.8 Liter twin cam engine, developing 185 HP.
Power is transferred to the rear by the afore mentioned factory 5 speed transmission which was a rare option. This Euro 107, as it is known by Mercedes aficionados, is said to be one the best, if not the best driving SL of the series.
Powered by a straight 6 engine (making the front end of the car lighter than the V8) it promoted sportier handling and a better-balanced car. The twin cam design put out more horsepower than all but one V8 Mercedes of the time. The seldom found 5-speed manual transmission, provides good acceleration and exceptional high-speed cruising ability, all while providing much better fuel economy than the V8 cars.
Considering the above and the the lower maintenance costs of the 6 Cyl vs the V8 it all adds up to very desirable package for a Mercedes Roadster. As an added bonus, the Euro versions featured anti-lock brakes, which were not available in the US at the time.
